Star-BulletinMary Slaney will not run in the fourth Nike P.L.A.Y. Waikiki Mile on Saturday because she's suffering from a severe cold and is taking antibiotics, according to a Honolulu Marathon Association official this morning. ''She has been ill and unable to run for two weeks,'' said Ken Macdowell, assistant race director for the association which co-sponsors the elite men's and women's mile races on Kalakaua Avenue.
Slaney, whose suspension from competition for allegedly high levels of testosterone was lifted by USA Track and Field in September, had planned to make her comeback to competition in the Waikiki Mile.
Macdowell, who said he spoke with Slaney's husband, Richard, by phone this morning, indicated she still wanted to attend as a nonparticipant Saturday's mile and the 25th Honolulu Marathon on Sunday.
Macdowel said Slaney will still make the trip to Hawaii, but not as a participant.
