MVT is seeking a hot doggie
DOG lovers, take note. The Manoa Valley Theatre is looking for a dog to be the canine incarnation of "Sylvia," its January production featuring an actress playing the role of a human-like dog. The real-canine "Sylvia" will get its photo projected on a screen at the end of the play. The script calls for Sylvia to be part Lab and part poodle, but any poi dog will be considered. In the words of the theater's public relations director, Sylvia Hormann-Alpo -- uh, I mean Hormann-Alper -- "Sylvia is independent, strong, affectionate, sexy and perky." I think she's referring to the dog. All dog photos will be used in a promotional display on the MVT lanai and the owner of the winning animal will get tickets to the opening night performance and also get complimentary dinners for two by Beau Soleil Restaurant on the lanai prior to the show. So get out those cameras and convince the theater people your dog should be "Sylvia."
LOTS of celebs are floating around the Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort on Maui this weekend. It's for the "Dick Van Patten Celebrity Challenge." Among those on hand for the golf and tennis tournament plus a fund-raising auction for Maui's "Women Helping Women" program (which operates the Hale Lokomaika'i Emergency Shelter) are host Van Patten, Kelly McGillis, William Shatner, Paul Sorvino, Nicolette Sheridan and those ubiquitous Hawaiian Tropics models. The whole weekend culminates with a Planet Hollywood party Sunday night ...
Up the Wazoo
SO why did Shirley Cavanaugh, communications director for the Office of the Senate President, let out a loud shriek over the Pacific on a jet bringing her home from the mainland? The trip happened on the day the Washington State Cougars played the University of Washington Huskies in the annual "Apple Cup," and Cavanaugh was unable to watch the game with her fellow WSU alums gathered at a pay-per-view party. Since the Cougars were having their best season in recent memory, she asked the United flight attendant if she could find out the game score. Moments later the attendant returned, knelt at Shirley's side and quietly said, "Washington State 41, Washington 35." That's when Cavanaugh let out the shriek, punctuating it with, "We're going to the Rose Bowl!" You can't blame her enthusiasm, Wazoo's last Rose Bowl appearance was in 1931 ...FILMMAKERS Myrna and Eddie Kamae sent a thank you note for taking notice of their film about the late Luther Kahekili Makekau, "A One Kine Hawaiian Man." It opened the recent Hawaii International Film Festival and the Kamaes report there were "standing room crowds everywhere we went." A final note from this caring couple: "Luther must be smiling." ...
Singing the blues
LYRIC tenor Harold S. Nakata isn't one to sing the blues -- his repertoire is more classical fare. But he's proudly singing the praises of his son, John K.B. Nakata, who for the past several years has served as his accompanist. No more. John is now a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy and doing just great. He was the only freshman in his battalion to receive an outstanding performance award. He's also a member of the Cadet Glee Club where he sings first tenor. The group will perform tomorrow in Giants Stadium at the annual Army-Navy game, which can be seen at 7 a.m. on KGMB. Nakata says he'll have to use two people to replace his son -- one on acoustic piano and one on keyboards ...
