Hawkins and Bourland
decide to leave Rainbows

The only two players University of Hawaii head football coach Fred vonAppen expects to lose at midterm are sophomores Josh Hawkins and Jerimi Bourland.

Both receivers want to transfer to other schools to see if they can get more playing time. VonAppen said after yesterday's Quarterback Club luncheon that he would help them any way he could.

"I'm trying to still get Jerimi enrolled at Abilene (Texas) Christian College," vonAppen said. "His sister attends Hardin-Simmons, which is also in Abilene.

"As for Josh, he has decided he wants to be a running back at a program where he has a chance to start. I wish both of them well."

Bourland was recruited out of Amherst, Texas, as a quarterback in 1996. The second day of fall camp, the UH coaching staff moved him to receiver.

He was injured the latter half of this season, but was briefly listed as the No. 3 quarterback behind Josh Skinner and Johnny Macon after Tim Carey went down.

Hawkins was recruited in 1995 out of Oak View, Calif. Last year as a redshirt freshman, the UH coaching staff projected him as a top wide receiver.

He played in nine games, catching four passes for 34 yards and one touchdown. This year, Hawkins played sparingly. He had no receptions and no rushing yards.
