Kahoolawe Rebirth Begins

Photography by Gary Kubota, Star-Bulletin

Amid chants and symbolic planting of native foliage,
Hawaiians and supporters on Maui yesterday celebrate
the start of reforesting Kahoolawe, the former target island
for Navy test bombs. With $400 million from Congress,
contractors will begin clearing ordnance from Kahoolawe
early next year, with reforestation to occur in
areas deemed safe by the Navy.
