commits to UHWithy-Allen led the Oahu Interscholastic Association Blue Conference in passing this year.
His commitment comes four days after St. Louis slotback Craig Stutzmann gave his verbal guarantee to UH.
"It was a plus to know Craig committed," said Withy-Allen, who spent time during the summer at a mainland football camp with Stutzmann. "I know he's got great speed."
Withy-Allen, who also plays power forward for the OIA champion Kalaheo basketball team, said he was impressed with the professional resumes of the coaches and their vision for the program.
"I'd also heard good things about them," he said.
Withy-Alllen, a 3.7 GPA student, had considered the Ivy League.
He said he's not sure whether or not he'll redshirt next year.
"A couple of months ago I wouldn't have thought about going to UH," he said. "I wanted to go to the mainland and experience college life there. But after being invited to the sidelines for the Air Force game (Nov. 1), I started talking to coach Tim Green (wide receivers), coach Wally English (offensive coordinator) and coach Guy Benjamin (quarterbacks coach) and my mind started changing."
Withy-Allen was also on the sidelines for the Notre Dame game on Saturday.
Amateurs win Burns golf title
The amateur team hung on to defeat the professionals, 12-12 to 11-12, in the Gov. Burns Challenge Cup that ended with 12 individual matches yesterday at the Olomana Golf Links.The pros took six matches, while the amateurs won five.
Pro Lance Suzuki and Larry Stubblefield halved their match yesterday.
Guy Yamamoto defeated Ron Castillo Sr., 5 and 4, assuring the amateur team of victory after it led, 7-5, going into the final day.
Pros Reynold Lee and Dean Prince and amateur Damien Jamila were the only golfers to go unbeaten in all three of their matches.
ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT: The fourth Royal Hawaiian Rowing Challenge, with top crews from the United States, England and Japan, will take place from Jan. 1-4 on the Ala Wai Canal.
College crews competing include Harvard, Stanford, Washington State, USC and Kyoto of Japan.
Open category crews include the Princeton 'Fat Cats', Westminster School of England, the Oregon Rowing Club Unlimited, the Honolulu Rowing Club and the Kyoto "Old Boys."
LIPP, ANDERSON CANOE WINNERS: Alan Lipp and LeeAnn Anderson overcame 30 mph winds and choppy seas to win the men's and women's titles in the fifth annual Ocean Club/Hinano Tahiti One-Man Canoe Classic last Saturday off Lanikai Beach.
Lipp, last year's men's runner-up, beat defending champion Jim Foti by 10 seconds with a time of 34 minutes, 28 seconds in the four-mile race.
Anderson outdistanced the women's field, finishing five minutes ahead of second-place Judy Sangiuliano.
STRONG SHOWING BY MILILANI TEAM: The Mililani Laulima girls under-13 team took runner-up honors in its division in the 15th annual Las Vegas Turkey Shoot Invitational Soccer Tournament at the Silver Bowl soccer complex.
The Mililani Laulima team had a 5-0 pool record before losing the championship match to Red Hots '85 of Las Vegas, 4-0.
Team members were Kristin Chung, Ashley Doi, Ashley Freitas, Jodie Hee, Jennifer Henaghan, Mallory Iha, Eryn Kishimoto, Kari Kurihara, Rachel Ling, Brandi Matsumoto, Jena Nishida, Kayla Oshiro, Jody Sing Chow, Jamie Yoyofuku and Krystal Uchida.
The head coach was Glenn Ichinose, the assistant coaches Morris Oshiro and Matt Chung.
WINDWARD SOCCER TOURNEY: American Youth Soccer Organization Gold Select teams from Divisions 3, 4 and 5 on Oahu will play in the 1997 AYSO Windward Classic tournament Dec. 26-29 at Kailua District Park.
The soccer action runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
BASKETBALL CLASSIC: The sixth annual Kalaheo Sun Press Basketball Classic featuring eight prep teams tips off tomorrow and runs through Saturday at the Kalaheo High gym.
Tomorrow's matchups are St. Louis-Nanakuli, 3:30 p.m.; Punahou-Roosevelt, 5 p.m.; Maryknoll-Mililani, 6:30 p.m., and Campbell-Kalaheo, 8 p.m.
The semifinals will be played at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Friday; the championship game at 8 p.m. Saturday.
