VonAppen:
Fur will fly

Hawii coach says
changes will be made

In the old movie "Network," fictional television newscaster Howard Beale didn't claim to know how people could solve their everyday problems. His only realization was: You had to get mad.

"I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore," was Beale's popular catch phrase.

And it's one the University of Hawaii football team should repeat at the conclusion of every meeting, weight-lifting session and practice from now until the 1998 season opener with Arizona.

"There could be some fur flying around here," a visibly angry Fred vonAppen said yesterday afternoon. "We're going to have a team meeting (Tuesday) where I'm going to tell them, 'Batten down the hatches, men.'

"We've got a lot of work to do and we don't have time for any slackers," the UH head coach added. "If they're not cutting it academically and they're not doing what we want them to do -- ass out, bye, see you. Pick up your scholarship and move on.

"And it's kind of the same for the staff. We've got some things that need to be straightened out. Pronto. I was in a red-ass mood after the (Notre Dame) game because it's my responsibility. I can't grade myself very high right now."

Part of vonAppen's anger centered on three plays in the 23-22 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. The first was the second-and-four call on Hawaii's final possession.

Senior quarterback Tim Carey threw a hitch-pass screen to wide receiver Eleu Kane. Instead of going down for a 1-yard gain, the sophomore tried to make something out of nothing, and paid for it with a crucial 7-yard loss.

Tharp threads the Notre Dame gauntlet.

"It's my responsibility to manage the game," vonAppen said. "I let the coordinators make the calls. That's the way it is. I'm not going to second-guess calls publicly.

"And I don't know that the call was so bad. It was Kane's response. He's a good player and a good guy. He was trying to make something good out of something bad. And it got worse."

On the next play, Carey lost track of how much time was left on the 25-second clock, leading to a critical delay-of-game penalty.

"For a fifth-year quarterback to stand out there at a key juncture of the game and not know the clock is running out and have a delay," vonAppen said. "Hell, I've been with people who fired your ass on the spot for that crap."

It eventually led to a punt that gave Notre Dame one last shot, and resulted in the third play that kept vonAppen up late Saturday night walking the floor, reliving the crushing defeat.

"And that was the third-and-17 play where we give up the big pass completion," vonAppen said. "We were in a coverage where we should have been able to make a play short of 17 yards.

"Instead it goes for 47. We can't have a fifth-year cornerback (Al Hunter) giving up inside position in man coverage. Once you've done that on a crossing route, it's over.

"It's just a simple game of throw and catch after that. Their quarterback (Ron Powlus) put it right in there and that's the ballgame, folks. Drive home safely."

It was the Rainbows' sixth loss in a row since they squared their record at 3-3 with a win over Fresno State. In vonAppen's two years, the Rainbows have made improvements, but only have five wins to show for it.

Seven of vonAppen's assistants will be on the road recruiting the next two weeks. But he still will require a detailed written report of the season from each of them.

"We'll be in an analytical mode the next couple of weeks," vonAppen said. "We need to examine our progress and examine ourselves from within and without."

VonAppen has lost three coaches from his original staff. He isn't sure if he will lose any this season, but said he wouldn't stand in the way if a coach had a better offer.

VonAppen also will be involved in extensive contract negotiations with UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida and president Kenneth Mortimer. He has a promissory note from the school concerning the $28,000 still owed him from the television package, and won't sign anything until that has been handled to his satisfaction.

27 Rainbow seniors say aloha after the game.

"The original 30-point plan that I proposed (last year) has been tailored down somewhat," vonAppen said. "Some have been met and some haven't. But I would prefer Hugh and I hammer out our own plan over the next few months.

"I'm glad the president came out and said he supported the direction we're taking the program. That was a positive. I think some of the physical changes facility-wise have been beneficial.

"I think we need to demonstrate to the public that we have a plan, that we have a dream and we're headed in that direction. I'm still going to dream that we're going to charter our asses out of here when we go on the road."

VonAppen also wants to instill a winning attitude in the team. Too many times the Rainbows lost this year because they didn't believe in themselves.

"I love our fifth-year seniors to death, but they had become satisfied with moral victories," vonAppen said. "I don't think the younger guys are, and we're going to hammer on that all spring. We have to learn how not to lose before we can win."
