Punishing Ultraman
event on Big Island

Twenty ultra-athletes, including three women, will take part in the three days of Ultraman, arguably the most demanding of multi-sports events, starting tomorrow with a 6.2-mile swim in Kailua Bay at Kailua-Kona on the Big Island and 90 miles of cycling to Volcanoes National Park.

On Saturday, the athletes will cycle another 171.4 miles to Hawi, via Kalapana, Pahoa, Hilo, the Hamakua Coast and Waimea.

After a night's rest, they will run a double-marathon of 52.4 miles at Kailua-Kona's Old Airport State Park.

ALOHA STADIUM BUSES: TheBus Aloha Stadium Football Express will run for Saturday's Western Athletic Conference football game at 3:30 p.m. between Notre Dame and the University of Hawaii.

The buses service the Windward area, Hawaii Kai, Kahala Mall, Kaimuki, Waikiki, UH and Ala Moana Center. The one-way fare is $2 (no change given). Transfers are not issued or accepted. Passes are not honored.

FREE SHUTTLES FOR HOOPS FANS: There will be free shuttle service provided by the University of Hawaii Parking and Traffic Office for fans attending the United Airlines Tipoff Basketball Tournament tomorrow and Sunday at the Special Events Arena.

Two shuttles will run from Krauss Hall via Correa Road and East West Road to the Biomedical Building and back to Krauss Hall. Temporary shuttle stops will be set up along the route. Fans waving down the shuttle also will be accommodated.

There will be continuous service from 5:30 p.m. to midnight on Friday and from 3-10 p.m. on Sunday.

TOYS FOR TOTS NIGHTS: Tomorrow evening has been designated as one of two Toys For Tots nights at the Special Events Arena, with fans encouraged to bring new unwrapped toys to the game and drop them off at the Bank of Hawaii booth near Gate A.

The second Toys For Tots night will be on Friday, Dec. 19, when the UHmen's basketball team plays Texas Southern.

TENNIS SPLIT FOR UH, HPU: Singles victories by Jakob Nilsson, Lars Endrigat, Eric Stone and Dominic Modise paced the Hawaii Pacific University men's tennis team to a 5-4 nod over the University of Hawaii yesterday at the UH courts.

The UH women routed HPU, 9-0, with Suzie Saunders, Mi-chelle Radman, Lynn Novack, Natalie Lurn and Nalani Cruz, winning in both singles and doubles.

WAHINE SIGN SOFTBALL CATCHER: Jennifer Tandarich, a switch-hitting catcher from Mt. Carmel (Calif.) High School has signed to play for the University of Hawaii women's softball team.

TSUNAMI PROS, YOUNGSTERS PLAY: The Hawaii Tsunami pro soccer team meets the Lanikai men's team at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Kaiser High School field after 6 p.m. games between the Tsunami Girls Under 14 team and the Maui Roadrunners. Admission is free.
