High-kicking fun

About a thousand top-level karate practitioners from around the country will participate in the Junior Olympics & Masters Karate Championships, hosted by Japan International Karate Center, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday at Blaisdell Arena.

The athletes range from 4 to more than 60 years old and will compete in three categories: kata, or form; kobudo, or weapons; and kumite, or sparring. Winners qualify to represent the United States in international competition next month in Budapest.

There will also be demonstrations by karate masters and title holders, including Melanie Genung of Seattle. Among Genung's accomplishments are two gold medals at the 1997 Hayashi-Ha Shito-Ryu World Championships and being named the U.S. Olympic Committee Athlete of the Year in 1993 and '96.

Admission to the championships is $10 a day; children under 5 admitted free. Call 593-1153.

Volcano artists open studios

It's rare to find all the studios of the Volcano Village Artists' Hui open at the same time. But they will be at the hui's annual sale this weekend.

Featured will be masks by Zeke Israel and Ira Ono, black-and-white photos by Chiu Leong, landscape and erotica photos by Mary Walsh, fiber and mixed-media weavings by Pam Barton, sculpture and drawings by Randy Takaki and ceramics by Ron Hanagami.

Those taking advantage of the long weekend to fly to the Big Island can stop by the studios from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. Street signs in Volcano will mark locations and detailed maps will be available at Volcano Store and Kilauea General Store.

Visiting all the studios will qualify you to win an art piece. Call (808)-967-7247.
