


Rainbows lead Sheriff Classic
Star-Bulletin staffKIHEI, Maui - The University of Hawaii men's golf team, paced by individual leader Van Wright, opened an 11-stroke advantage over second-place UC Davis after yesterday's second round of the Stan Sheriff Classic on the Makena course. Wright shot a par 72 for a 36-hole total of 145 and is three strokes ahead of Andrew Luke (76) of British Columbia and four better than teammate Ryan Koshi (75). The Rainbows' team total was 603. UC Davis was at 614 followed by San Francisco at 616.
The 54-hole tournament was to wind up today.
BYUH WOMEN SEEDED NO. 1: Undefeated defending champion Brigham Young-Hawaii is the top seed for the fourth straight year in the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Tournament, to be played Dec. 3-6 on the campus of Olivet Nazarene in Kankakee, Ill.
BYUH (25-0) has been paired in Pool A with No. 8 Biola (28-5), Dickinson State (35-0), St. Mary's of Texas (27-10) and Western Oregon (30-10).
SOLO CANOE-RACING AT LANIKAI: The Ocean Club/Hinano Lanikai Cold Pack Classic one-person canoe races will be held Saturday morning off Lanikai Beach.
There will be long (about six miles) and short (about four miles) courses, with competition for men and women in eight divisions - novice B, novice A, junior (18 years and under), under 30, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60-plus.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The women's race starts at 10 a.m., the men's race at 11:30 a.m.
Entry fee consists of a 12-pack of whatever you like to drink plus $3. Grinds and entry-fee consumption follow the men's finish.
RURAL JUNIOR LEAGUE FINALE: Aiea Green meets Mililani Gold in the championship game of the Rural Invitational Junior Baseball League at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park.
KOREAN WRESTLING: The 1997 Hawaii championship of the Korean sport of wrestling called ssirum will be held Saturday at 5 p.m. at the McKinley High School Gym.
Featuring the top competitors from Korea, the tournament is sponsored by the Korean Ssirum Organization, the KBS-TV, the United Korean Society of Hawaii and the Korean Sports Association of Hawaii.
Admission is $20.
ROOSEVELT SOCCER TOURNEY: The Roosevelt High School Christmas Invitational Girls' Soccer Tournament, with Nanakuli, St. Andrews, Waianae, Campbell, Kahuku, Radford and Kaimuki joining the host Rough Riders, is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 11-13, at Roosevelt Stadium. The action begins at 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 8:45 a.m. on Saturday.
CHRISTENSEN TO USF: Former Iolani all-state basketball forward Derek Christensen has signed a letter of intent to accept a four-year scholarship with the University of San Francisco. Christensen is already enrolled at the school. His scholarship will begin next year.
BODYBOARDING BIGGIE: The 16th annual Morey World Bodyboarding Championships for men and women, with a record $70,000 in prize money, will be contested during a holding period of Jan. 3-11, 1998, at the Banzai Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore.
The 5-A men's competition will have a purse of $40,000 and the first-time 7-A women's event will offer $30,000 in prizes.
There will be pre-trials at the Turtle Bay Hilton on Jan. 1-2.
