


Moe named Wahine soccer MVP
Junior defender Tui Moe was named the Most Valuable Player and sophomore midfielder Wendy Miyashiro the Most Inspirational Player for the University of Hawaii women's soccer team. The Most Valuable Striker award went to junior Tricia Nishikawa, freshman Jennifer Hamm was named the Most Valuable Midfielder, freshman Demarre Sanchez was selected Most Valuable Goalkeeper and Moe was picked Most Valuable Defender.
On her MVP award, Moe said, "It makes me feel good to know my teammates respect me and that I respect them. This is better than winning any skill award."
The Wahine set three individual records and tied six others during the 1997 season.
Records set were lowest goals allowed average (1.477) by Demarre Sanchez; shots taken (58) by Jennifer Hamm, and shots taken in a match (8) by Hamm.
Records tied include career game-winning goals (3) by Lara Anzai; career game-winning assists (2) by Wendy Miyashiro; consecutive matches scoring a point (4) by Hamm; consecutive matches scoring a goal (3) by Hamm; points in a match (4) by Tricia Nishikawa, and goals in a match (2) by Nishikawa.
The team set match records for points (13); goals (5), and corner kicks taken (11).
Team season records set were for wins (7); points (61); goals (22); shots taken (237); goalkeeper shutouts (4); fouls committed (207), and corner kicks taken (87).
The attendance (736) at the final match against Hawaii Pacific is a single match record.
JUNIOR OLYMPIC TITLE RUNS: The USA Track and Field Hawaii Association Junior Olympic Cross-Country Championships - a 3-kilometer race for bantams and midgets, a 4K race for older youths - will be run at Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden, Kaneohe, at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
The races serve to qualify Hawaii runners for the National Junior Olympic Meet at Portland, Ore., on Dec. 13.

SCHWENKE NEVADA ALL-TOURNEY PICK: Former Laie resident Tupusina Schwenke, a 5-foot-9 junior at Green Valley High School, was named to the 4A Nevada State Volleyball Championship all-tournament team last week.
Tupusina attended Laie Elementary and Kahuku Intermediate schools before her family moved to Las Vegas.
