Park no longer will spray pesticides on weekend

We were at Moanalua Gardens on Sunday, Nov. 2, when someone driving a golf cart sprayed pesticides on weeds about 10:30-11 a.m. We didn't feel that was appropriate, since people were picnicking and walking around and kids were playing. How do we notify someone?

Moanalua Gardens is listed in the telephone directory.

We informed Moanalua Garden officials about your concern and they took immediate action to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Jim Whitman, executive secretary of the Damon Estate, which owns, operates and maintains Moanalua Gardens, agreed that the spraying was not "appropriate" at that time.

"We're a private park open seven days a week during daylight hours and we have to get certain work done during daylight," he said. Generally, staff tries to do it when no one is around, but that's rare, he said.

That said, the employee was counseled and a new policy of "absolutely no spraying on weekends" was set, Whitman said.
