St. Louis defeats Kamehameha, 10-3, to take ILH title

After St. Louis' 31-game win streak came to a screeching halt last week at the hands of Kamehameha, head coach Cal Lee calmly muttered, "Everything is correctible -- from football to life."

Friday night, the Crusaders, who looked incredibly lifeless in the 35-14 loss to the Warriors, emphatically bore him out in a 10-3 league playoff victory before 18,406 fans at Aloha Stadium.

The Crusaders will meet Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Waianae next Friday in the Oahu Prep Bowl at the stadium. St. Louis be the Seariders last year, 7-0.

Establishing a running game that pressed-into-service sophomore quarterback, Timmy Chang, critically needed to function, junior running back Noah Campbell rushed for 120 yards on 17 carries.

Campbell, who was held to 51 yards last week, scored the only touchdown the Crusaders needed to win their 12th straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship.

Basketball Wahine overwhelm Bonnies, 83-45

A little bit of advance knowledge went a long way for the University of Hawaii women's basketball team in its season-opener against St. Bonaventure in the second game of the Hawaiian Regent Classic at the Special Events Arena Friday night.

The Bonnies (0-2) had used a half-court trap and full-court press effectively in a narrow loss to Ohio State last Sunday.

"The coaches stressed all this past week about how to overcome them. If we had messed up, then we wouldn't have been taking care of business," said Nani Cockett, the leading scorer for the Wahine with 25 points. "Hats off to the coaches for recognizing what we had to do."

The Wahine went about their business, once the opening-game jitters dissipated, outscoring St. Bonaventure in every quarter for an 83-45 victory before 1,300 fans,

"We did a good job of defense," Wahine head coach Vince Goo said. "We took away what we thought were their strengths which was to run and put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket."

UH's ball-hawking defense kept the Bonnies from getting their transition game going with any regularity and forced 21 turnovers.

The Wahine had 14 turnovers, but only three in the second half and UH recorded eight steals in each half with Kylie Page, BJ Itoman and Cockett picking up four each.
