Defending state champion Punahou and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Kamehameha buzzed through pool play matches yesterday in the 29th Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association girls' volleyball tournament at Waiakea High and the Afook-Chinen Civic Center. In a rematch of last year's state final, the Buffanblu defeated McKinley, 15-3, 15-8, as Rosalyn Dang had seven kills, while Jessica Jung had six digs and Lindsey Berg five. The Buffanblu got three aces from Berg and six kills from Dang and Jessica Buskirk as they beat Konawaena, 15-12, 15-9, in their other match at Waiakea.
At the Civic Center, Kamehameha defeated Aiea, 15-5, 15-1, behind eight kills by Casey Castillo and four aces by Nohea Tano. In defeating Pahoa, 15-3, 15-2, 6-foot-2 Lily Kahumoku delivered 11 kills (she had 16 on the day) and Castillo had four aces.
University of Hawaii baseball coach Les Murakami announced yesterday the early signing of five high school players. Five prep baseball standouts sign early to play for Rainbows
They are pitchers Sean Yamashita of Pearl City High, Andy Pratt of Chino Valley (Ariz.) High, Aaron Pribble of Sir Francis Drake High in Fairfax, Calif., and Carsten Sabathia of Vallejo (Calif.) High, and outfielder Junior Ramirez of George Washington High in New York City.
LASORDA TO DO THE HONORS: Former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda will give a short speech before the start of the Nov. 28 Hawaii Winter Baseball all-star game on Maui and will throw out the first ball for the 6 p.m. game.
UH HOSTS SHERIFF CLASSIC: The University of Hawaii men's golf team will play host to five others in the inaugural Stan Sheriff Classic Monday and Tuesday at the Makena course in Kihei, Maui.
Joining the Rainbows in the 36-hole event, named for the late UH athletic director, will be UH-Hilo, UC Davis, San Francisco, British Columbia and Osaka of Japan.
SSIRUM WRESTLING: Twenty-four top-ranking ssirum wrestlers from Korea will compete in a special Hawaii championship Nov. 29, starting at 5 p.m., at the McKinley High School Gym. The traditional sport of ssirum dates back to the 5th Century.
KARATE NATIONALS: The national Junior Olympics and Masters Karate Championships will be held Nov. 28-29 at the Blaisdell Arena.
Among the 1,000 athletes expected to compete are several Hawaii standouts, including 1996 national gold medalists Aaron Oandasan, 14, Elisa Au, 16, and Jaime Migia, 11.
