A new strain of influenza virus has been identified here, and state officials are urging people at risk for flu to get shots.

The new virus was found in tests of samples from people who became ill with flu at a Kaneohe nursing home in September. Five of the 86 people infected at the Ann Pearl Nursing Facility died.

Three samples of the virus were sent to the Centers for Disease Control, which identified the Type A Sydney strain of influenza.

"This is a rare strain," said Patrick Johnston, state Health Department spokesman.

The Type A Sydney strain is slightly different from three viruses covered by this year's vaccine, but antiviral drugs will reduce symptoms, he said.

The Department of Health sent a letter yesterday to about 3,000 physicians statewide warning of the new virus.
