Give a piece of the palace as a regal gift for the holidays. Mark your place with a bit of history
The Friends of 'Iolani Palace offer a ribbon bookmark - a 22-karat-gold-electroplated replica of the decorative plates on palace door hinges. The historical, scrolled bookmark sells for $8.50 at The Palace Shop, open 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays in the 'Iolani Barracks compound.
The marker features a 3-by-1/2-inch metal top with a 9-1/2-inch burgundy grosgrain ribbon. The metal scrolling replicates the original nickel-plated hinge panels made by Hopkins & Dickenson of New York for the 1882 construction of 'Iolani Palace by King Kalakaua.
Besides serving as a tangible reminder of the graceful palace, the bookmark represents a door opening onto knowledge, history and culture.
Also, a hinge can be defined as a pivotal principle. 'Onipa'a - meaning to persevere while moving forward - was the motto of Queen Lili'uokalani (1838-1917), Hawaii's last sovereign. She presided in 'Iolani Palace from 1891 to 1893.
Hawaii residents can order a ribbon bookmark by sending an $11.40 check made to: The Palace Shop, P.O. Box 2259, Honolulu 96804. For mainland and international mailing, and to charge by phone, call 532-1050.
Also, a collector's 1997 tree ornament comes in the design of 'Iolani Palace. This 22-karat-gold-electroplated brass ornament with gift box and informational insert is $15. Other regal items include an exclusive jewelry line.
