Keeping butterflies free on Kauai

Butterfly consultant Martin V. Feather has joined Wings Over Hawaii as the Kauai-

based company opens its butterfly garden at Kilohana Plantation in Puhi.

Admission to the garden is free.

"This is like a little Victorian garden and is landscaped with nectar plants," Feather said. "It's one of our breeding facilities for Monarch butterflies."

Wings Over Hawaii raises butterflies for release at weddings and other special events.

Feather came to Hawaii in May from the Edinburgh Butterfly & Insect World in Scotland where he was general manager.

He also was director of the Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Board and vice chairman of the Midlothian Tourism Forum.

He now is working with the state and federal agriculture departments to obtain permits for captive breeding and exhibition of non-native butterfly species.
