Rainbows ring in hoops season

The University of Hawaii men's basketball team has its coming out party tomorrow night, complete with favors.

The Rainbows will receive their WAC Pacific Division championship rings before the 7 p.m. tip-off against the California All-Stars at the Special Events Arena.

Coach Riley Wallace's UH team tied Fresno State for the Pacific Division title last season.

All seats are general admission and cost $6. Proceeds will go to the UH athletic department scholarship fund and also help to defray costs for the Rainbows' European tour next summer.

Senior center Ales Zivanovic, who was projected to start at center, badly sprained his left ankle during Sunday's practice and is out indefinitely.

The exhibition game will be broadcast live on KCCN 1420-AM.

BYUH BOWS IN OVERTIME: At Los Angeles, Brigham Young-Hawaii's Seasiders fell to Cal State-Los Angeles, 76-73, in overtime last night after rallying from a whopping 35-12 halftime deficit to tie the game on Earl Smith's putback with two seconds to play in regulation.

Freshman guard Adam Evans triggered BYUH's second-half comeback, scoring all 17 of his points after the break. Senior guard Brandyn Akana scored a game-high 19 for the Seasiders, who dropped three of four games on their season-opening mainland trip.

Cal State-Los Angeles (1-1) was led by Derrick Barnes, with 14 points.

UH SOFTBALL SIGNEES: Three top Ha-waii prep players have signed letters of intent to play for the University of Hawaii women's softball team.

Committing to the Wahine for next season are Kasey Tabar of University Lab School, Trisha Ramos from Kauai High and Kamehameha Schools' Stacy Makahilahila.

Tabar is a 5-foot-7 shortstop who hit .354 for the Junior Rainbows last season and was an ILH all-star.

Ramos, last year's KIF Player of the Year, hit .488 for the Red Raiders. She is projected as a shortstop and outfielder.

Makahilahila has been a three-year starter for the Warriors and hit .450 with 12 stolen bases in 12 attempts last season. She is a second baseman/outfielder.

MEET FOUR OF FAB FIVE: Jerome Freeman, Al Davis, Dwight Holiday and John Penebacker of the University of Hawaii's "Fabulous Five" will sign autographs Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Sears' sporting goods department at the Windward Mall on behalf of the "Coaches vs. Cancer" program sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

UH associate coach Bob Nash, the fifth member of the Rainbows' basketball powerhouse of 25 years ago, will be unable to attend because of a practice schedule conflict.

NOTRE DAME-UH 'COACHES' CORNER': Football coach Fred von Appen and athletic director Hugh Yoshida of Hawaii will join Bob Davie and Mike Wadsworth, their Notre Dame counterparts, at a Nov. 28 luncheon at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Tapa Room sponsored by the Notre Dame Club of Hawaii.

KITV's Shawn Ching, a former UH player whose brother Jason is on the Notre Dame team, will be the master of ceremonies.

No-host cocktails are at 11 a.m., the luncheon at noon. Cost is $38 per ticket or $380 per table. Call 239-8327 and press *3.

The Rainbows and Fighting Irish tangle at Aloha Stadium on Nov. 30.
