Sasada takes Callaway golf title

Brian Sasada of Makena shot a 3-under-par 69 in yesterday's final round to win the men's title in the Callaway Hawaii State Open golf tournament at the Mauna Kea Resort. Sasada's 54-hole total of 208 was six strokes better than runner-up Jerry Mullen, who also finished with a 69.

Big Islander Camie Hoshino ran off with the women's prize, shooting a par-72 yesterday for a 216 total and 17-stroke cushion over second-place Julie Miyagi, who closed with a 76.

Senior honors went to Dean Prince, who had a 72 yesterday and 215 for the tournament, 15 shots ahead of Allan Yamamoto (75) and Larry Lee Sr. (77).

FICK IS PLAYER OF WEEK: Robert Fick of the Honolulu Sharks has been named Hawaii Winter Baseball Player of the Week for Nov. 11-16.

The catcher/third baseman from Cal State-Northridge led the Sharks to a 6-0 record last week, batting .429 with three doubles and a grand slam homer. He scored six runs and drove in eight.

250 TICKETS LEFT FOR UH DEBUT: There were 250 seats still available for the University of Hawaii's Nov. 28 basketball season opener against Indiana at the Special Events Arena, as of yesterday.

The UH ticket office is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

RAINBOW SAILORS FIFTH: The University of Hawaii coed sailing team finished fifth in a 16-team fleet at the North/South Intersectional regatta at Santa Barbara, Calif., last weekend.

Stanford won the title with 134 points. Hawaii had 219.

Jeff Nelson, Len Yonemura, Brent Harrill, June Tomizawa, Molly O'Brien and Laura Rehg represented UH, sailing in two Flying Junior and two Laser divisions.

This weekend, at Newport, Calif., Harrill, Nelson and Cole Slater will sail for UH in the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association Sloop Nationals.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Hawaii Special Olympics is seeking volunteers to help with its Holiday Classic, in which about 500 retarded athletes from around the state compete in ice skating at the Ice Palace on Dec. 4 and bowling and basketball at the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base on Dec. 5-7.

There will be a mandatory rally and training session for volunteers Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Marine Base theaters.

PREP SOCCER TOURNEY: The 15th annual Castle/Leilehua Soccer Tournament will be played at the two high school fields Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with Aiea, Pearl City and the host schools from the Oahu Interscholastic Association and Hawaii School for Girls, Iolani and Punahou from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

Action at both sites begins at 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Saturday's games are at Castle only at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
