Emme, Vuitton support youth

THIS promises to be a big pre-Christmas season of sharing for the Hawaii Youth Symphony. For one thing, this year's annual "Emme's Island Moments" Christmas concert will benefit the Youth Symphony. It'll be held Nov. 30 at the Hilton Hawaii Village Coral Ballroom in order for it to be edited for television, which will screen it Dec. 17 on KHON-TV. Hostess Emme Tomimbang has assembled a stellar group including the Krush, Jimmy Borges, Auntie Irmgard Aluli and Puamana, Amy & Willy K., Miss Universe Brook Lee, actor (no relation) Jason Scott Lee and members of the Hawaii Youth Symphony. Tickets to the live concert can be purchased through the Youth Symphony Orchestra at 941-4706 ... And Louis Vuitton Hawaii is holding a winter concert by the youthful musicians Sunday afternoon on Dec. 7 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Joining them will be Japanese opera singer Shigeko Kasuga. The Youth Symphony was one of two beneficiaries chosen for Louis Vuitton's charity golf tournament, the other being the REHAB hospital ...

SPEAKING of music, how'd you like to spend a week with the glamorous Eroica Trio, which dazzled Hawaii Theatre audiences last year? They're performing and chatting with Martin Goldsmith on "Performance Today" on Public Radio. The three beauties won't be seen, more's the pity, but you can hear them and their music on KHPR daily this week from 1 to 3 p.m. and for commuters from 5 to 8 a.m. on KIPO.

Tropic topics

THEY found an interesting collection of judges to select four local winners in the Miss Hawaiian Tropic bikini contest at Turtle Bay last weekend. Kickboxing champ Dennis Alexio got his kicks by being a judge, a role he couldn't kick about. Another judge, Marcus Bender, Hawaiian Natural Water Co. honcho, proved that oil and water do mix. And who better to judge these youthful, anxious beauties than actors from "The Young and the Restless"? The four winners at Turtle Bay will now advance to the world championship in Las Vegas ...

LONGTIME film and TV commercial director Mique Quenzer is in intensive care at Queen's Hospital after suffering a stroke in the brain and a violent seizure, and is now in a coma. Friends are hoping for the best ... And adman Mike DiCarlo, who was given a lifetime achievement award at the 1997 ad industry's Pele Awards, didn't have long to enjoy it. He died Nov. 12 following a long battle with cancer ...

MEMBERS of First Insurance held a craft and bake sale and raised $2,000 for the Alana Dung Medical Research Trust Fund. Company president Allen Uyeda made the presentation to Stephen and Adelia Dung in the name of Alana, who died after inspiring a massive bone marrow drive ...

Stomp of approval

IF you missed that sensational run of "Stomp" at the Hawaii Theatre last December, make sure to get tickets for this year's run Dec. 16 to 21. If you'd like a preview of the gifted performers, they'll be appearing next Monday, Nov. 24, on the David Letterman "Late Night" show on CBS. And speaking of Letterman, it's a long shot but producers of his show, reading about the Honolulu Academy of Arts "Keoni of Hawaii" aloha shirt exhibit in the New York Times Magazine, called the Academy's David de la Torre to inquire about Thursday's opening and see if creator John "Keoni" Meigs, now in his 80s, might be available for an appearance along with his creations.
