Amfac/JMB Hawaii Inc. had a net loss of $6.9 million in the three months ended Sept. 30, compared with a loss of $5.9 million in the year-earlier quarter. Losses widen at Amfac/JMB
The latest third-quarter net included $7.4 million in interest expense balanced, to some extent, by a $4.2 million income tax benefit.
From operations alone, the Hawaii agriculture and land company had a loss of $3.5 million in the latest quarter, compared with a $2.3 million loss in 1996's quarter.
Revenues were $17.5 million from agriculture and $13.9 million from property business, for a total of $31.4 million. In the 1996 quarter, Amfac had revenues of $19.1 million from agriculture and $8.3 million from property, a total of $27.4 million.
The company said sugar production and prices were lower.
The Official All Star Cafe Honolulu, due to open later this year in the ANA Kalakaua Center in Waikiki, is seeking to hire nearly 200 workers for a range of restaurant jobs. The Poi Company, Hawaii's third-largest poi supplier, has raised the price it will pay for poi taro, in an effort to get taro farmers to grow more and relieve the current poi shortage. Supplier to pay more to relieve poi shortage
Aimoku McLellan, president, said the price has been raised to $50 a bag for raw taro corms, the root-like tuba from which poi is made. The price had been $40 to $43 a standard 80-pound bag.
Local growers and believers in Hawaiian traditions have raised concerns about government proposals to import poi to meet the demand, McLellan said.
Marc Resorts has taken over management of the 413-suite Embassy Suites Resort on Maui, which will be renamed Embassy Vacation Resort-Kaanapali Beach. Marc Resorts earlier took over management of the Embassy Vacation Resort Poipu Point on Kauai.
