A seafood shop on Kekaulike Street in Chinatown, just before Nimitz Highway, has been putting its wares in the middle of the sidewalk, making it hazardous for people to walk by. Is that allowed? Call police at 911. HPD's Chinatown substation will look into your complaint, said William Deering, chief of the housing code section for the city Building Department.
There is a "small space" on the sidewalk where merchants can place their wares, he said, and they are not supposed to go beyond that to encroach on a pedestrian's right of way.
This is not an uncommon problem in Chinatown, and police there have been handling complaints.
Across from Aiea Elementary School on Moanalua Road, where the old Navy laundry used to be, the sidewalk area is overgrown with weeds and grass. When people are walking to the football game on Saturday nights, they have to walk on the street. The lot is also overgrown. Can you check to see whose responsibility that is? Someone else must have complained to the responsible party because by the time a city inspector went to the site, "the overgrowth was corrected," said William Deering, who is chief of the housing code section for the city Building Department.

Yvonne Hetton, a real estate agent with East Oahu Realty, said people from the Hawaii Kai area can drop off cards at her office, 6600 Kalanianaole Highway, Suite 114, or call 395-1760 and a pickup will be arranged.
"I have done this for Helen Daniels for years," Hetton said, describing the picture books Daniels produced for hospitalized children as "exquisite."
She said she and other women in the office will cut the cards "to help this young mother out."
On the other side of the island, Carolyn Fu also said she wanted to continue Daniels' tradition. "I was looking for something I could work on all year" to help the community, said Fu, who owns her own nutrition business. " I thought this would be fun and I'm into recycling."
She and her friends, who are calling themselves the "Christmas Angels," are targeting their picture books for Kapiolani Medical Center.
Send cards to Fu at P.O. Box 1589, Waianae HI 96792.
To the inconsiderate halalu fishermen at Pokai Bay who leave their buckets overnight to save a place for themselves and friends, then go home to sleep! It is very disheartening to get up at 1:30 a.m., drive an hour to reach your destination, then find all these buckets -- some left as early as 6 p.m. the night before. Fishing is a stress release on weekends for those of us who work. Please give everyone an equal chance of getting a space. Auwe
