Wahine finish

season with win
Star-BulletinThe University of Hawaii women's soccer team completed its fourth varsity season yesterday with a victory, a single-season team record seventh. The 1-0 triumph over Hawaii Pacific University at wind-swept Ala Wai Field also put the brakes on UH's seven-match losing streak before 736 fans.
"I thought it was a good game. We were really motivated and had more offense against them than last year," HPU head coach Mark Kane said.
The UH goal came at 13 minutes, 50 seconds when Jennifer Hamm stole the ball and passed up the left sideline to Valeria Marciel.
Marciel beat her defender and crossed from the end line to Tricia Nishikawa, who placed her head shot in the lower right-hand corner.
"I thought the ball was going out, but I crossed it right at the line," Marciel said.
The Wahine outshot the Sea Warriors, 20-7, but were high or wide often and were stopped seven times by HPU goalkeeper Carissa Manangan, three times with diving saves on dangerous attempts.
UH finishes with a 7-12-1 overall record, HPU at 7-9. Both teams are loaded with underclassmen, which makes for a bright future.
The postgame celebration with the seniors bedecked with leis, receiving hugs, the focus of clicking cameras and tear-streaked cheeks marked the traditional end to the collegiate careers of five University of Hawaii Wahine soccer players. UHseniors full of memories
As they posed for a group of family and friends with cameras, a voice in the crowd said, "now it's time to get your degrees."
They are all on track to do just that. The five seniors and the top memory they take with them are:
Lara Anzai: A four-year letter winner, she officially will enter the College of Education next fall and expects to earn her degree in elementary education in the spring of 1999.
Her career highlight: "Receiving the first Wahine soccer uniform. It came after five consecutive days of tryouts, eight hours a day. It was such a relief and so exciting all at the same time."
Carrie Buckingham: She needs one more year to complete her bachelor's degree in art, then it will be on to graduate school to study graphic design.
The two-year letter winner's career highlight: "It's not so much of a highlight, but this last game, just watching the freshmen playing their hearts out."
Melissa Moore: A three-year letter winner, she will graduate at the end of the fall semester next year with a degree in communications.
Her career highlight: "It's probably scoring a goal against Loyola Marymount each year we played against them."
Moore transfered back to UH after one semester at LMU.
Poliala Paresa: The four-year letter winner will receive her degree in communications in December 1998.
Her career highlight: "Scoring my first goal this year. This was the year I was most pumped up. Just being a part of the improvement this season.
Denise Tsukada: A four-year letter winner, she will receive her degree in May with a major in psychology and a minor in sociology. She will be an assistant coach for the Punahou intermediate boys' team.
She would like to pursue a pro soccer career in Japan after graduation, otherwise she will enter graduate school.
Her career highlight: "It's awesome to play Division I soccer. It's a privilege to play four years under the same coach and to be able to represent Hawaii."
