Genoa turns 79
in musical style

FRIENDS and family helped that fabulous songbird Genoa Keawe celebrate her 79th birthday Thursday night at the Hawaiian Regent Lobby Bar. Genoa's sons Gary, Arthur and Kaleo and daughter Miriam performed, as did granddaughter Amanda. Other entertainers included Willie K, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, Ray and Aloida Kane, George Kuo, Kalu Cummings, David Kamakahi, BB Shawn and Lavina Gonsalves. Genoa's terrific ...

Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano, 78, who has been battling prostate cancer that spread into his bones, says he has a "clean bill of health." He underwent nine straight days of radiation treatment at Queen's. "Boy, that takes everything out of you," he said. But the good monsignor is sounding like his old self again. He even threw a new joke at me this week. That's good news ...

PALOMINO turned over more than $5,000 -- all of Monday's luncheon receipts, plus donations -- to the surviving Faumuina family members. Seven members of the family were killed in a tragic house fire in Palolo Oct. 15. Don Murphy, a big man and no slouch when it comes to holding fund-raisers for good causes, was among those coming in and making a donation. Don runs Murphy's a block away. I had Chef Eddie Erice's macadamia nut crusted mahimahi with sweet-sour sauce at Murphy's the other day for $10.50 and it was just as good as anything similar at any of the big name eateries with much higher prices ...

Palomino is jumping

GETTING back to Palomino, it IS the party spot. Carole Brooks and SuAnn Bamer held their Libra Women bash there recently. Sex therapist Kevin Hughes sat in with such Libras as Alice Lombardo, Jean Rolles, Lisa Bos, Jany Cataldo, Susan Flowers, Dale Ogata, Nora Meijide and Beatriz Schaller ...

I, Emme Tomimbang and Carole Kai have birthdays in a row, starting with mine on Oct. 26. Carole was there for lunch on Tuesday with Karen Nakagawa and Emme was there Monday night with hubby, Judge Jim Burns. The judge looked envious that night when a group of Wood's Worthy Women, organized by Mihana Souza, tossed their annual party for me there. We started earlier at one of my favorite spots, the Halekulani's House Without a Key. The island music under the stars by Alan Akaka, Benny Kalama and Sonny Kamahele, and the hula by Kanoe Miller were delicious ...

AT dinner at Palomino, Margaret Murchie and Conne Sutherland tied in a competition to name my most worthy traits. (No wisecracks, please.) Murchie won in a runoff by having more junk in her purse than Sutherland. The stuff Murchie has in her "purse" would overflow a huge burlap bag. Other Worthy Women Monday evening were Laurie Tom, Liz Perry, Robin Midkiff, Suzanne DeFranco and Alice Clay ... Herb and Jennifer Zukerkorn and Linda McGill and Dave Rovens, and Theresa San Nicolas and Faith Furukawa and others were at tables near us and they all joined in singing "Happy Birthday." It was truly a worthy night and, overall, it has been a much better year for me. Friends are wonderful ...

Borges sounds great

JIMMY Borges never sounded better as he sang the Frank Sinatra Songbook with the Honolulu Symphony at the Concert Hall last weekend. "That was a fabulous evening," said Jim Nabors, praising Jimmy backstage. Nabors does a Christmas show with the Symphony at the Hawaii Theatre Dec. 5-6 ... The Symphony features violinist Eugene Foder tomorrow and Tuesday at the Concert Hall ...
