Bankoh adds $1 fee for some ATM users
Bank of Hawaii has begun charging $1 per transaction to people who withdraw funds from its automated teller machines but don't have Bank of Hawaii cards.The bank said the charge to noncustomers is to defray some of the expenses of operating ATMs.
Customers using Bankoh BankCards or credit cards issued by the bank are not being charged. So far it is a pilot program at selected machines on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island, the bank said.
ATM users are being warned of the fee by on-screen messages, the banks said.
Japan Airlines takes Kona service daily
HILO -- Japan Airlines is set to begin daily nonstop flights from Tokyo to Kona International Airport on Wednesday.JAL began flying three flights a week to Kona in June of last year. The number of weekly flights rose to five just last month.
A Hawaiian-style greeting awaits Wednesday's passengers aboard JAL Flight 70. They will be entertained by hula dancers and presented gift boxes that include Kona coffee and macadamia nuts.
Levi laying off 6,395; closing 11 U.S. plants
SAN FRANCISCO -- Levi Stauss & Co. will close 11 plants in four states and lay off 6,395 workers to bring manufacturing capacity in line with production needs, the apparel company announced today.The layoff will involve 34 percent of the company's total manufacturing work force in the United States and Canada.
The privately held company said it will spend $200 million in employee benefits to ease the transition for employees laid off next year.
In addition, the Levi Strauss Foundation plans to spend $8 million in grants to communities involved.
The plants to be closed are in Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas and Tennessee.
