Stars outscore CaneFires 7-6;
Sharks fall, 5-0

Hilo's Billy Deck hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Stars went on to beat the West Oahu CaneFires, 7-6, last night in Hawaii Winter Baseball action at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Stars built a 7-3 lead and hung on to win despite a 4-for-4 effort by West Oahu outfielder Mark Fischer.

Fischer hit a three-run homer in the ninth that brought the CaneFires within one run.

Catcher Steve Lomasney added a two-run homer for West Oahu.

Stingrays 5, Sharks 0: At Wailuku, Maui blanked Honolulu behind the five-hit pitching of starter Kevin Gryboski and relievers Darrin Babineaux and Jake Viano.

Gryboski allowed just one hit over the first five innings. Babineaux gave up three hits and struck out six over the next three innings and Viano worked the ninth.

Babineaux hasn't allowed an earned run in 141/3 innings this season and has struck out 11.
