Kamaes capture legend on film

EDDIE and Myrna Kamae's latest documentary, "Luther Kahekili Makekau -- One Kine Hawaiian Man," will be officially premiered by the Hawaii International Film Festival Sunday Nov. 9 at 5 and 7 p.m. at McCoy Pavilion in Ala Moana Park. Makekau was one of a kind. He died in 1988 at age 98. Kamae filmed footage of Makekau months before the free-spirited legend died on Thanksgiving Day. Luther is described as a Hawaiian philosopher, chanter, singer, poet and lover. He was also called an outlaw, cattle rustler, rebel and rascal. He told Kamae to put his story on film. At the Big Isle's Pahoa Lounge, one of Makekau's favorite places, the documentary was sneak previewed last July for Luther's family and friends to celebrate his birthday. Ruth Kaholoaa gave a prayer in Hawaiian, all wished "Uncle" Luther happy birthday, and Ruth assured Luther that everyone was "talking nice" about him ...

Doc was hot stuff

C. BREWER Chairman Doc Buyers was quite an athlete in earlier years. His Long Island, N.Y., high school, Stony Brook School, selected Doc to be among the early inductees of its new Hall of Fame. Doc didn't want to brag about it but after his neighbor, Joan Bickson, let the cat out of the bag, I pressured Doc for info. He lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track. He captained the baseball team and had a .352 batting average. As the football team's quarterback, he won the school's top gridiron award, the Vandeveer Trophy ...

VINTNERS in Paradise, a celebration of food and wine to benefit the American Diabetes Association Hawaii Affiliate and Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education, will be held Nov. 10 in the Hilton's Tapa Ballroom.
