


Speakers cap men's march against violence
A doctor and a paramedic who have dealt with domestic violence at the front lines will be the speakers at a rally following the annual Men's March Against Violence Thursday in downtown Honolulu.About 300 men are expected to join in the march, which is the finale to observances of Domestic Violence Awareness Month during October. The noon demonstration will proceed along King Street from the Kekaulike Street intersection to Skygate Park.
Joe Bloom, an organizer of the event, said the theme is "healing the wounds of violence." Speakers will be Dr. Gilbert Werjowski, a professor at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns Medical School; and Robert Pedro, a mobile intensive care technician.
Bishop Estate launches Web site of its history
Anyone curious about the history of Bishop Estate and Kamehameha Schools, institutions now steeped in controversy and focus of at least three probes, may read it on the computer screen.The full text of the will of Bernice Pauahi Bishop is contained on the estate's first public Web site, launched earlier this month. By Star-Bulletin staff70-year-old charged with double-shooting
Two women who were shot Friday remain in fair condition at Queen's Hospital while the alleged gunman, a 70-year-old Kalihi man, was charged yesterday with attempted murder.William K. Moke Puha of Kokea Street is charged with one count of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder and a firearms offense. He is being held in lieu of $420,000 bail.
Moke Puha allegedly fired seven or eight shots at the two Salt Lake women, ages 49 and 41, in the parking lot of the Hawaii Employers Council building near Keehi Lagoon Park. He was arrested on Kaliawa Street about 10 minutes after the shooting.
Foul play ruled out in weekend traffic death
Homicide investigators have ruled out foul play in the death of a 39-year-old woman, who was fatally injured Saturday when she fell from a car traveling on Kapahulu Avenue near Herbert Street.The woman and her husband, 57, were arguing when the accident occurred about 7:30 a.m., police said. The woman was leaning against the door on the driver's side when she fell out and struck her head on the pavement. She was taken to Queen's Hospital where she died at 11:41 a.m.
The case is being investigated as a traffic fatality.
Man honored for catching burglary suspect
A Honolulu man who chased and caught a burglary suspect has been honored by the Honolulu Police Department.Chief Michael Nakamura presented the department's Certificate of Merit to Farao Tavale Jr. in a ceremony Thursday.
The burglar in the July 13 incident was caught in the act by a Kinau Street resident, who chased him. Tavale, joining the chase, caught him on Alapai Street. The suspect was arrested on burglary, robbery, threatening and drug charges.
