Rain, rain,
come again Irish DayIT was raining money at a recent sales meeting of the Tony Group (Tony Honda, Tony Pacific Nissan, etc.) to kick off a new rain promotion. The sales force was showered with hundreds of dollars and the salesmen stormed around to pick up what they could. As for the promotion itself, you had a better chance attending the sales meeting. Following in the footsteps of the jewelry chain that offered a 100 per cent rebate on merchandise bought during a monthlong period if the temperature hit 93 -- it didn't -- and the furniture store that refunded money spent on anything bought during a certain period if it rained on a certain day -- it didn't -- come the Tony people. In this promotion, new car buyers get a $5,000 refund if it rains one-half inch or more at Aloha Stadium on Nov. 29 during the UH-Notre Dame game. When I asked the meteorologist at the National Weather Service what the odds of this might be, he laughed. Certainly less than 1 percent, he opined, and probably much less than that ...
WINNER of the 1997 Retailer of the Year award, Mike Jenness, didn't start out with ambitions of being a retailer. But he got the bug working part time at Reyn's while majoring in political science at Chaminade. Lured away from political interests by two retailing mentors, Reyn McCullough and Sam Kramer, founders of Reyn's and Kramer's, respectively, Jenness has become a storybook success, and today is exec V.P. and CEO of Reyn's ...

JUDGING from the glottal stop (in the Hawai'i sign at the new Convention Center) angling down like an apostrophe, as pictured on the front page of yesterday's Star-Bulletin, it looks to be an easy fix. Just angle the bottom of that "apostrophe" slightly to the right. Or better yet, lose it. Not everyone uses a glottal stop in the word "Hawaii," including the Star-Bulletin ... Speaking of yesterday's paper, did you note the Dilbert cartoon dealing with forged sports memorabilia in which a character asks, "Can I interest you in a baseball signed by Moses?" That same day, an ad was headlined, "Meet Jesus & Get a Free Autograph!" But it's not a forgery -- it referred to local boxer Jesus Salud appearing at Ala Moana Center ...
IT'S that time again. Every two years, Millie's Tours from New York brings a group of visitors to Waikiki and scheduled, as always, is a visit to hear pianist Don Conover wherever he may be. This year, they're really locked on to Conover's schedule. He performs Friday and Saturday nights with guest singers in the Alana Hotel's Cafe Picasso, long the headquarters of Jimmy Borges and Betty Loo Taylor. In addition, Sunday morning Millie and her group will attend Church of the Crossroads, where Conover plays organ and directs the choir. That night it's a return to the Alana, where he'll do an old fashioned pub-style sing-along -- shades of the Rose and Crown. On Monday morning, the group will tour the Hawaii Theatre where Conover will play the Robert Morton Orchestral Theater Organ. Now, those are fans! ... Mad over Conover
