Anna Fry remembers when she was 3 years old, she liked picking up a pencil and drawing line sketches of people. A winning way with sketches
"My favorite thing is to do a drawing of the backs of people," said Fry, a fifth-grade student at Kula Elementary School.
"Then, I started drawing different things, like animals."
Fry's drawing of a chameleon eating a fly recently took first place in the art competition for students from third to fifth grade at the Maui County Fair.
Fry also does well academically, receiving mainly A's and B's on her report card last semester.
School principal Rene Yamafuji says Fry is a well-rounded student.
"She's a very athletic student on the playground, playing soccer," Yamafuji said.
Fry's mother, Jamie, said Anna carries a sketch book with her everywhere. Anna's interest in art began to grow when the school invited artists to conduct classes and share their experience and techniques with students, she said.
"That's when she decided she wanted to be an artist," Jamie Fry said.
Anna began taking art classes at Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center this summer. Instructor Pamela Hayes encouraged her to enter the competition.
Anna says she views art as a "fun hobby" and likes drawing because she can use her imagination.
"I enjoy it because you can draw anything you like," she said.
