UPW charges group underpays handicapped

WAILUKU -- The United Public Workers union is challenging a county grant to a nonprofit Maui group that employs the handicapped for maintenance work at less than the minimum wage of $5.25 an hour.

The lawsuit, filed last week, charges the payroll was not properly certified to allow workers to receive below-minimum wages.

Ka Lima O Maui official Jamie Woodburn has said workers are paid less than minimum wage because they take longer on tasks.
