Honokohau sunbathers
must cover up or pay

Nude sunbathers, keep it under wraps or you'll pay.

Two already have.

Larry Berk and Robert Clements pleaded guilty to being nude at the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park on July 24. They each were fined $90 on the Big Island this week by U.S. Magistrate Judge Edward King.

Honokohau Beach has long been a favorite spot for nude sunbathers because of its accessibility and seclusion.

But this year park rangers started enforcing the prohibition against nudity within the park.

Native Hawaiians have argued that nudity is inappropriate at the park.

"The park is a treasured resource for all of Hawaii's people: residents and visitors, individuals and families," said U.S. Attorney Steven Alm.

"Nudity by certain park users is inconsistent with the use and enjoyment of the park by some other park users and will be subject to prosecution."

The violation carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in jail and a fine up to $5,000.

Isle people working to change the image of leprosy

Good news, great achievement and hope don't seem to fit in the same sentence with Hansen's disease, but that is the theme of a World Health Organization show that will feature four Hawaii residents among the stars.

"We consider this a major step in replacing the old stereotype," said Anwei Skinsnes Law, coordinator of "Quest for Dignity, A Victory over Leprosy/Hansen's Disease."

The exhibition, which will open Oct. 30 in the United Nations Building in New York City, will combine photographic essays of people who vanquished the disease and information on the scientific success story in curing the illness, which carried a stigma since ancient times. The highlight of the show will be guides who will have one-on-one encounters with the press and the public to tell their own stories about overcoming the disease.

Professional storyteller and recording artist Makia Malo will open the show with a Hawaiian chant. He and Bernard Punikaia, an activist who has lobbied and demonstrated for years to improve the conditions of patients here, will meet the press and the public to tell their stories. So will Olivia Breitha, who told her story in a book, "Olivia, My Life of Exile in Kalaupapa," and Catherine Puahala, a longtime Kalaupapa resident.

The four will join 20 other Hansen's disease patients from 10 countries, and a host of dignitaries at an opening banquet Oct. 30 at the United Nations.

Tribute to Denver to be held at Unity Church

A tribute to singer and composer John Denver, who died Sunday in a California airplane crash, will be held Sunday at Unity Church of Hawaii.

The Rev. John Strickland will preside at the 4:30 p.m. service to celebrate Denver's talent and humanitarian efforts.

Parking will be available at Waikiki School.
