Yamamoto wins
Mayor’s Cup

Guy Yamamoto edged David Kang and Regan Lee to win the Mayor's Cup golf tournament at the Ala Wai Course yesterday.

Yamamoto finished the 36-hole event with a 136, one stroke ahead of Kang and Lee.

Randi Sakihara was the women's low gross winner with a 158.

Low net honors went to Loyce Frias with a 136.

McGRUFF WINNERS: Doug Ebbers won the McGruff eight-kilometer run at Kapiolani Park yesterday with a time of 27 minutes, 29 seconds. Scott Lundquist was second in 28:13.

Cathy Wellman was first in the women's division in 33:10. Cricket Indra was runner-up in 34:44.

In the three-kilometer race, Siul Michel came in first in 8:44 in the men's division and Lauren Jaynes topped the women's division in 10:35.

DILLINGHAM FINALS: The men's singles and women's doubles finals of the Dillingham Tennis Championships start at 1 p.m. today at the Punahou School Courts.

The men's doubles final is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.

VULCANS SWEEP: The University of Hawaii at Hilo won the men's eight-kilometer race and the women's five-kilometer race in the Chaminade Invitational Cross-Country Meet Saturday with 26 and 32 points, respectively.

Hawaii Pacific University was runner-up in both divisions in the meet held at its Windward Campus.

Individually, UHH's Jochem Bind won the men's race in 26 minutes, 25 seconds. The Vulcans Dawn Ratay took the women's race in 19:15.


Sharks record
first victory

The Honolulu Sharks started fast with a four-run first inning, then relied on the strong pitching of Brian Cooper, Apostle Garcia, Yusaku Iriki and Junichi Kawahara to hold off the West Oahu CaneFires for a 4-2 victory at Rainbow Stadium yesterday.

The Sharks sent eight men to the plate in the first inning for their first Hawaii Winter Baseball league victory.

Stingrays 4, Stars 1: At Wailuku, Maui, for the third consecutive game, the Maui Stingrays triumphed over the Hilo Stars, 4-1, at Ichiro "Iron" Maehara Stadium yesterday.

The Stingrays pitching staff has yet to allow an earned run in 27 innings this season.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Maui took the lead on an RBI single by Joe Mathis and a sacrifice fly by Mike Metcalfe.

Hilo's Onan Masaoka took the loss. Kailua's Kyle Kawabata (Phillies) pitched in relief for the Stars giving all 30 major league teams representation in the HWB.
