Nicole Kidman
born in Hawaii

What ever happened to the old wive's tale that Nicole Kidman -- now starring in the box-office blockbuster "The Peacemaker" and the wife of Tom Cruise -- is a native of Hawaii? Is it fact or fiction?

It's fact. Nicole Kidman was born in 1967 in Hawaii to an Australian couple, Janelle Kidman, a nursing teacher, and Anthony Kidman, a biochemist. The family later moved to Washington, D.C., where Kidman's father conducted research on breast cancer.

When she was 4, the family returned to Australia. Drawn to the arts, Kidman took ballet, mime and drama lessons in childhood.

She was to win international recognition with her starring role in the feature film "Dead Calm" in 1989. Receiving many film offers after that, she played a neurologist in "Days of Thunder" in 1990, appearing on screen with box-office idol Cruise. They fell in love and were married Dec. 24, 1990, in Telluride, Colo.
