State's luxury hotels raise rates slightly
An increase of 3.8 percent since last year in the average room rate in Hawaii's luxury hotels didn't scare people away in August, but increases cut into occupancy in the other hotels, according to a new survey by Smith Travel Research and the accounting firm Coopers & Lybrand.The average luxury room rate was $225.56 in August, compared with $217.37 a year earlier, but occupancy was flat at 81.6 percent.
Upscale hotels, where rates jumped 11.3 percent, saw their occupancy drop to 81.7 percent, from 85.1 percent.
Midprice hotels, with a 2 percent higher average rate, showed 78.5 percent occupancy, down from 81.6 percent. Budget hotels, with a 4.9 percent rate increase, averaged 73.9 percent full, down from 76.6 percent.
Coca-Cola chairman in critical condition
ATLANTA -- Roberto C. Goizueta, chairman and chief executive of Coca-Cola Co., was in critical condition today after developing a throat infection while being treated for lung cancer.Goizueta was in intensive care at Emory University Hospital, the company said in a statement.
Goizueta was diagnosed with cancer last month.
Apple ships version of Rhapsody software
CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Apple Computer Inc. said it shipped an early version of its new Rhapsody operating system software to developers and cut prices by as much as $1,000 on some PowerBook models.Shipping the new Rhapsody operating system shows interim Chief Executive Steve Jobs's commitment to rebuild Apple's product line, said analyst Bill Milton of Brown Brothers Harriman.
The operating system will be available to users in 1998.
