HILO -- The University of Hawaii Board of Regents today is expected to name the UH-Hilo baseball field after that school's first athletic director and his wife -- George and Marion Hall. UH-Hilo names
field to honor HallsUH-Hilo interim chancellor William A. Pearman yesterday said the Halls, long-time residents of the Big Island, were big supporters of the university who often volunteered their time -- and money -- to support Vulcan athletics.
George Hall served as the first athletic director for UH-Hilo, while he and his wife were charter members of Hilo's Vulcan Booster Club. Moreover, the couple provided fellowship to hundreds of Hilo athletes, with an endowment established in their name.
Marion Hall passed away on July 3, 1990. George Hall died on Jan. 14, 1991. Board policy allows campuses to name facilities and other improvements after people only after five years has passed since their deaths.
Pearman said there has been continued community support for the George and Marion Hall Field.
