Borges sings
a familiar tune

IN the late '60s I "discovered" Jimmy Borges for islanders. I was the Star-Bulletin's Entertainment Editor and a photo arrived of "Borges from Hawaii" who was to appear on Jonathan Winters' TV show. I'd never heard of him, so I contacted the network for info on Borges, which I printed. Jimmy and his family left the isles when he was a kid and moved to the San Francisco Bay area. Later, when Jimmy moved back home, we became pals. We also found we shared things in common. We live and die with the S.F. 49ers. We love golf and play together to this day. And we are great fans of Frank Sinatra. In the past year I found Jimmy and I had similar tastes in another area. When I took Cynthia Child to his gig at the Alana, Jimmy walked up and said, "Cynthia, years ago I had a crush on you." OK, that's understandable. A few months later I took Margaret Murchie to see Jimmy's show. He walked up and said, "Margaret, years ago I had a crush on you." Hummm, remarkable coincidence. Recently, Jimmy called and said: "Ben, I hear you took Jean Dickinson to the IHS Big Band Bash. You won't believe this, but years ago I had a crush on Jean." I am still flabbergasted ... "Crush" Borges will repeat his smash pops concert with the Honolulu Symphony Oct. 24-25 in the Concert Hall. Sinatra let Jimmy and the Symphony have his music charts for this concert, which was presented in '91 and '93 and is being brought back by popular demand. Jimmy will do seven songs that were not in the early concerts. I hope Borges sings his theme song, "I've Got a Crush on You" ...

Selleck's smack

THAT is some kiss that Tom Selleck plants on Kevin Kline in the comedy, "In & Out." Don't let that keep you away from this satirical romp because the one kiss between Selleck, who portrays a network newscaster, and Kline, playing a high school teacher, is as far as it goes. The jokes and reactions by cast members are wildly funny in this farce. And Kline's solo dance scene is a riot. Selleck is solid as the cool, relaxed newsman. Also strong is the supporting cast of Joan Cusack, playing the teacher's fiancee, and Bob Newhart, Debbie Reynolds, Wilford Brimley and Matt Dillon ...

LINDA WONG made the shot of the day Wednesday in the Danny Kaleikini charity golf tourney at Pearl. Linda won $100 in the "closest-to-the-pin" competition on the par-3 16th hole. Her shot wound up one inch from the hole. But this was no skilled golf shot. Linda whacked the ball left into no-man's or woman's land. But it hit a tree and caromed back into play, almost rolling into the cup ... While playing in the tourney, Bulletin sports columnist Bill Kwon conducted an interview by cellular phone with Stanford defensive end Kailee Wong in Palo Alto, Calif. Wong, who will play in this year's Hula Bowl, is the son of Warner Wong, an All-Star guard at Roosevelt in 1962-63. Bill put down the phone to hit a beautiful shot out of the rough. Kailee heard the contact and said, "That sounded like a good shot." True, Kwon parred the tough 12th hole ...

Chanel's Cho moves up

MARGARET CHO, who has been running Chanel's Waikiki store, departed Monday for Manila, where she will be based as Chanel's Asia-Pacific retail and trade manager ... Owen Holt, retired Santa Clara County deputy sheriff, returned to San Jose last week after visiting family and friends. Holt has been the recording secretary for the National Association of Police Organizations for 12 years ... Gordon Biersch is celebrating its third anniversary this weekend ...
