Wahine aim for road win
By Al Chase
Star-BulletinThe University of Hawaii women's soccer team will be trying for its first road victory of the season during a two-match trip to California this weekend. Once again, UH head coach Pinsoom Tenzing will be counting on some of his young players to produce in the absence of injured starters.
The Wahine (4-5-1) will be without junior striker Tricia Nishikawa (bruised metatarsals on right foot) and freshman midfielder Jennifer Hamm (contusion to right quadriceps). Both are recovering, but will not make the trip as Tenzing wants them healthy for the opening of Western Athletic Conference play Oct. 9 against Utah.
UH plays UC Santa Barbara (1-6-1) tonight. In matches against common opponents, UCSB lost to Loyola Marymount, 2-1, and defeated Cal State Northridge, 1-0. The Wahine lost to both schools on the last road trip.
The Gauchos are led by junior Alison Lott, who has scored three of their five goals this season.
Hawaii plays NCAA Division II Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday morning. The Toros (8-0-1) and the Wahine have never met.
Toros goalkeeper Brandy Kaake has not allowed a goal in the second half this season and sports a 0.64 goals allowed average.
The leading Wahine scorers making the trip are senior midfielder Melissa Moore and sophomore midfielder Wendy Miyashiro, each with two goals and one assist for five points.
