UH’s Goods gets
WAC weekly honor

Hawaii's Cecelia Goods was named the Western Athletic Conference volleyball player of the week for the Pacific Division after leading the Wahine to wins against San Jose State and Fresno State.

Goods, a 6-foot-1 senior middle hitter, had 22 kills in 46 attempts and only six errors to hit .348.

Goods is averaging 2.09 blocks per game, which ranks her second among NCAA Division I players.

LOVE IN KAPALUA FIELD: PGA Championship winner Davis Love III and nine other former Kapalua champions will be among the 56-player field in the 72-hole Lincoln-Mercury Kapalua International Nov. 6-9 at the Maui resort.

Joining Love, who won in 1992, will be defending champion Paul Stankowski, and previous winners Jim Furyk (1995), Mike Hulbert (1991), David Peoples (1990), Peter Jacobsen (1989), Bob Gilder (1988), Andy Bean (1986-87), Sandy Lyle (1984) and David Ishii (1982).

Fred Couples, a back-to-back winner in 1993-94, 1985 champion Mark O'Meara and Greg Norman, who won in 1983, are the only former tournament champions not entered in the 16th and final Lincoln-Mercury event which will be played at Kapalua's Plantation and Bay golf courses.

Other pros competing will be Scott Simpson, European Ryder Cup player Darren Clarke and five others who have won PGA tournaments this year -- Stuart Appleby, Loren Roberts, John Cook, Phil Blackmar and Scott McCarron.

The first three rounds of the $1.2 million event will be televised by ESPN with Sunday's final round by ABC.

HESIA LOSES: Former Kaneohe resident Ricky Hesia lost a unanimous 10-round decision to Edgar Ruiz of Mexico in a welterweight fight held last night at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, Calif.

Hesia, who lives in Downey, Calif., knocked down Ruiz in the first round, but wasn't aggressive enough the rest of the way to secure the victory.

The 29-year-old Hesia dropped to 19-4 with the loss.

UH-HILO WINS: The University of Hawaii at Hilo women's volleyball team beat Alaska-Anchorage, 15-3, 15-4, 8-15, 15-6, in a Pacific West Conference match last night at the UHH Gym.

Ginelle Palau led the Vulcans with 12 kills and 13 digs. Heather Campbell added 11 kills and a game-high five blocks.

The Vulcans are 8-7 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The Seawolves are 4-11 and 2-1.

VULCANS MOVE UP: The University of Hawaii women's cross-country team moved up seven spots, from 23rd to 16th, in the NCAA Division II poll.

Adams State of Colorado is ranked. No. 1.

WAHINE IN NINTH PLACE: The University of Hawaii women's golf team was in ninth place after the first day of the Colorado Invitational, in Louisville, Colo.

Hawaii's 318 was led by Linda Appelbad's 75, good for fifth place in the individual standings. Katrina Forsberg shot a 78 (23rd), Desiree Ting a 79 (27th), Mei-Lin Poai an 86 (62nd) and Melissa Shintani a 90 (69th).

Nebraska led the team competition with a 296.

KOYAMA DOES IT AGAIN: Yoshiko Koyama won the 19th annual Hawaii State Women's Golf Association Senior Championship for the fourth time with an overall low gross score of 81 yesterday at Hickam Air Force Base's Mamala Bay Golf Course.

UH SAILORS START WELL: The University of Hawaii women's sailing team opened its inaugural season with a second-place finish at the Pacific Coast Women's Single-Handed Championships at Mission Bay, Calif., last weekend.

Hawaii's Laura Rehg placed second with 57 points, two behind winner Fiona McLean of UC Irvine. UH's Molly O'Bryan was third with 67 points; Ursula Austin fifth with 115 points, and Sandy Herrmann seventh with 138 points.

SEASIDERS SHUT OUT: The Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's soccer team was shut out by Chapman College, 4-0, yesterday at Orange, Calif.

BYUH fell to 0-3, while Chapman improved to 5-2-1.
