Running back Quincy Jacobs
quits UH football team

University of Hawaii running back Quincy Jacobs has quit the team, head coach Fred vonAppen confirmed this morning.

Jacobs, a transfer from Stanford University, was facing an indefinite suspension for breaking team rules on the plane ride back from Nevada-Las Vegas, but apparently decided to quit instead.

"He hasn't shown up for practice or meetings, so the assumption is he's dropped himself from the squad," vonAppen said today. "We've cleaned his locker out."

VonAppen said freshman Charles Tharp probably will replace Jacobs in the starting lineup when Hawaii plays Colorado State next Saturday.

Jacobs was involved in two widely publicized incidents last year. He was suspended for being in a fight with former UH basketball player Aaron Curry and men's volleyball player Moses Goods.

The senior from Thousand Oaks, Calif., also was at the center of a brawl in the Aloha Stadium stands late in the game against Brigham Young University last November.

Win over San Jose
boosts Wahine confidence

With Attitude and Confidence. That's what WAC means to the University of Hawaii women's volleyball team.

Seventeen matches into their second year in the Western Athletic Conference, the Wahine have yet to lose a regular-season league contest. San Jose State was exactly what Hawaii needed after a high-caliber diet of Top 25 teams and the Wahine, starved for success, responded with a 15-8, 15-11, 15-5 victory at the Special Events Arena Friday night.

"The biggest thing about tonight was our attitude," said Hawaii junior hitter Kelli Cordray, who served for seven consecutive points in Game 3 and put down the match's final two kills. "We had a solid week of practice. We're our biggest opponent right now and everything hinges on what attitude we bring to the court.

"I think we're ready to get down to business (Saturday night against Fresno State). They're a better team than San Jose and we need to stay steady and play with confidence."

Fresno State (10-5, 0-1) dropped its WAC opener Thursday night at San Diego State, 15-12, 15-13, 3-15, 15-1. Senior hitter Diana Nalbandian had 22 kills and junior hitter Shanus Bennett added 18 in the losing effort.

The Bulldogs have never beaten the Wahine in 17 meetings.

Nanakuli rallies
to beat Pearl City

Matthew Asinsin caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Silas Ah Sui in the closing moments of the game as host Nanakuli came back to beat Pearl City, 12-7 Friday night, knocking the Chargers from the unbeaten ranks in the OIA Blue Conference.

The Golden Hawks and Chargers are both 3-1.

Ah Sui, the Nanakuli quarterback, scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter before hitting for the game-winning TD toss at the end.

Ah Sui also helped set up the winning touchdown with a defensive play, intercepting a pass near midfield with 1:57 left in the game, giving the Golden Hawks their final chance.

Greg Kishaba scored on a 1-yard plunge for the Chargers in the first quarter and it looked like that would hold up until Ah Sui's interception.

Nanakuli lost its top ball-carrier, Sam You, early in the game with a leg injury.

Mililani 27, Kalani 20: At Aloha Stadium, Jose Serate scored three touchdowns as the Trojans (3-0) emerged as the only remaining unbeaten team in the Blue Conference. Serate caught a 37-yard scoring pass from Barney Beter, then carried the ball in from 4 and 1- yards out. He finished 62 yards on 13 carries. Beter also threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Kris Andrews to open Mililani's scoring. Kalani (2-2) was held to 28 yards rushing but made a game of it as Kapono Kamakawiwo'ole passed for 204 yards, including touchdowns of 52 and 33 yards to Alvin Tokunaga. Tokunaga, a running back, caught five passes for 132 yards.

Farrington 27, Roosevelt 13: At Roosevelt, Tuaila Onosai ran for two touchdowns as the Governors (1-1-1) beat the Rough Riders in the Red Conference. Onosai had a 70-yard scoring run and a 3-yarder. The 5-foot-10, 150-pound sophomore finished with 138 yards on seven carries. Farrington piled up 326 yards on the ground. Governors' quarterback T.J. Aukusitino passed for one touchdown and ran for another. Roosevelt quarterback Chad Kapanui had two touchdown passes, a 65-yarder to Daniel Corpos and a 38-yarder to Chad Owens. Farrington junior defensive back Daryl Kuresa knocked down three passes and teammates Benton Faamasilii and Kali Williamson had three sacks and seven hurries. The Governors held the Rough Riders (0-4) to 76 yards rushing.

Kahuku 29, Radford 0: At Aloha Stadium, the Red Raiders' defense held the Rams (0-3) to minus 5 yards rushing in a White Conference game. Kahuku (3-0) rushed for 219 yards, using 11 ball carriers. Fea Tupou led the way with 40 yards on 11 carries, including a 20-yard touchdown jaunt. But it was the Red Raiders' defense that was dominant. Robert Hesia recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for one score and Kahuku also intercepted two passes and had six quarterback sacks.

Kaiser 12, Kailua 0: Kaiser, the Cougars (2-2) had another outstanding game from linebacker Randy Ling, who was in on 16 tackles in a White Conference shutout of the Surfriders (1-3). Kaiser's defense also contributed a score on a 31-yard fumble return by Chapin Ahuna. Kailua was held to 109 yards in total offense. Jason Allen had a 2-yard touchdown run for Kaiser and finished with 92 yards rushing on 14 carries. It was Ling's sixth consecutive game (including preseason) with 15 or more tackles. The 5-foot-7, 165-pounder had 22 last week and is averaging 19 a game.
