Kop’s 70 wins him a
spot in U.S. Amateur

Brandan Kop shot a 2-under-par 70 yesterday at the Mid-Pacific Country Club to earn the Hawaii Sectional Qualifying Tournament's lone berth in the 17th U.S. Amateur Championship.

The U.S. Amateur will be played Oct. 18-23 in Dallas.

Paul Kimura finished second with a 72 and will be the first alternate.

WAHINE 20TH: The University of Hawaii women's volleyball team slipped one notch, from 19th to 20th, in Volleyball Magazine's weekly Top 20.

The Wahine (6-4) split a weekend series with Loyola Marymount (9-3), which also fell one spot, from 17th to 18th.

Penn State (11-0) remains No. 1, followed by Stanford (10-2).

SEA WARRIORS TIE: At Olympia, Wash., the Hawaii Pacific University men's soccer team played through two overtimes to a scoreless tie against Evergreen State yesterday.

The Sea Warriors came up with 19 shots on goal, to Evergreen's three.

Hawaii Pacific was playing without leading scorer Cesar Jube, who had to sit out the game after receiving a red card in Hawaii Pacific's previous game.

The Sea Warriors are now 4-2-1.

BIKAR CITED: Chaminade University outside hitter Doris Bikar was named Pac West player of the week after 34 kills and 43 digs in two matches last week against Hawaii Pacific University. The Silverswords and Sea Warriors split the weekend series.

HUNTING & FISHING DAY: The 26th National Hunting & Fishing Day will be celebrated in Hawaii Saturday and Sunday at the Koko Head Shooting Complex from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be demonstrations, food, prizes and activities for the public. To participate in the activities, bring a canned food for the Hawaii Food Bank or make a $1 donation for each activity coupon desired.
