Ever thought of "yurting" at Kolo? Treat yourself to a yurt
Translation: Camping in a yurt at Molokai Ranch's just-opened Kolo Camp.
Set on a bluff overlooking the ocean and the island of Lanai, Kolo Camp, the second campsite on The Great Molokai Ranch Trail, is a unique hideaway with yurts -- circular tents on raised platforms -- as accommodations.
Each of the 20 yurts has heavy canvas sides and roof, French doors, ceiling fan, skylight and a four-poster queen-size bed. Each also has a private, open-roofed bathroom with solar-powered hot showers and lights, and self-composting toilets.
Atop the bluff is an open-air pavilion, a gathering spot for meals or simply to talk story about the day's activities, which at Kolo generally center on the ocean: kayaking, shoreline fishing, outrigger canoe paddling, sailing and surfing.
Non-ocean activities include mountain biking and hiking. Each guest is given a mountain bike to ride along the oceanfront trails on Molokai's southern shore from Kolo Pier to Hale O Lono Harbor.
It's not necessary to bring any gear. The ranch provides snorkeling equipment, kayaks, sailboats, bodyboards and surfboards.
All-inclusive rates for Kolo Camp -- $160 a night for kamaainas and $215 for out-of-state guests -- include accommodations, three meals, a snack-filled cooler and transportation to and from the ranch, as well as ranch transportation.
