Castillo claims
match play title

WAILEA, Maui -- Ron Castillo, Jr. took a commanding lead after the first 18 holes and went on to defeat Joe Root, 6 and 5, to win the 1997 Aloha Section PGA Match Play Championship at the Wailea Golf Club's Gold Course yesterday.

Castillo was 7 up after the first 18 holes of the 36-hole final. He increased his lead to 9 up after 20 holes, but Root staged a rally by winning the next four holes.

However, Castillo maintained his steady play and his margin was too much to overcome. The match ended on the 31st hole.

TITANS BLANK WAHINE: At Fullerton, Calif., the Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team got one goal and one assist from Shawna Panter and two assists from Christina Stewart to defeat the University of Hawaii, 3-0, in a nonconference match yesterday.

The best scoring opportunity for the Wahine (3-2-1) came in the 89th minute, but CSFU goalkeeper Dawn Bitsie was able to stop Wendy Miyashiro's penalty kick.

The Wahine, who were outshot 16-7, play Cal State Northridge tomorrow night.

BYUH SWEEPS: At St. Louis, the Brigham Young University-Hawaii Seasiders swept Missouri Baptist, 15-12, 15-0, 15-5, in a nonconference women's volleyball match last night.

Ana Alves led BYUH with 16 kills. Vanessa Valansi added 14, Arlete Silva had 13 and Kalolaine Uluave put down 11.

The Seasiders so dominated the second game that Missouri Baptist managed just three sideouts.

Heather Campbell, with 16 kills, Ginelle Palau, with 15 kills, and Meliah Hai-Kelly, with 11 kills and 12 total blocks, led the Vulcans (5-7).

UHH head coach Sharon Peterson also gave credit to Kaleihaku Nathaniel for her work off the bench including a key block -- stuffing the setter -- that helped the Vulcans turn things around in the fifth game.
