Andre Haag took enough advanced placement courses at Baldwin High School to skip his freshman year at Brown University in Rhode Island, where he is attending college this fall. A head start on college
Haag, 18, who spoke as a class valedictorian during graduation ceremonies at Baldwin, is a National Merit finalist and a Sterling Scholar Awards recipient. He graduated from Baldwin with a 4.3 grade-point average.
"He's a very gifted student, and I think part of it, too, is he enjoys learning," said Grace Taguchi, his English teacher.
Besides being president of the National Honor Society and vice president of the Science Club, Haag was secretary of the Key Club.
The club does public service projects, including beach cleanups and book-collecting drives for poor students.
While attending a summer class at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, he worked as a hospital volunteer. This summer, he was employed at a cafe and also was a teacher assistant at summer school.
"I like keeping myself busy, being helpful," Haag said.
He said he feels fortunate to have been involved in some science projects during his high school years.
He said his mother, teacher Nancy Haag, is a major reason for his academic success. "My mother's been my sole provider and supporter."
