Cowboys pounded out
full measure of respect

No disrespect. Well, maybe a little . . .

But Wyoming's 35-6 victory over Hawaii was nothing fancy. Strong line play, stifling man-to-man pass defense and a brilliant runner on offense -- solid staples of winning football -- were the biggest factors at Aloha Stadium on Saturday.

New locker room wallpaper courtesy of comments by revenge-minded Rainbows last week merely made preparation less of a chore and more of a mission for the Cowboys.

(Wyoming had beaten Hawaii four consecutive times, including routs of 66-0 and 52-6 the previous two seasons.)

"They just fed the fire and gave us more motivation," said Wyoming tailback Mike Jenkins, who had four touchdowns and plenty of yards by land, air and see ya.

While Jenkins stats were a fantasy football player's delight, a reality check came early for the Rainbows. And reality and linebacker Kamuela Cobb-Adams bit; on the third play from scrimmage Jenkins turned a short pass into a 70-yard gain setting up Wyoming's first score.

"We saw that they liked to blitz a lot. We caught them in one and it looked like there was some confusion in their coverage," Cowboy coach Dana Dimel said. "We run a lot of routes to a back in the flat. It's amazing how many times they'll be open."

It was also eye-opening how Wyoming dominated the trenches. On offense, they blew open holes for 214 yards of rushing and protected for 225 passing -- and no sacks. On defense, they limited the Rainbows to 4 yards rushing and 215 overall -- and got eight sacks.

"You could call this game the battle of the sackmasters. Both teams had a lot of them coming in," Dimel said. "It was nice to get eight. And we met our goal of eliminating negative yardage plays on offense."

Hawaii defensive coordinator Don Lindsey said the Cowboys' dominant O-line was disappointingly thorough. But he knew it would present a literally huge challenge.

"People may fail to remember that they've got four seniors and a junior out there who produced a lot of offense last season," he said. "They know how to open holes and pick up blitzes."

Those were skills their Rainbow counterparts didn't display Saturday. But their position coach, Greg Olejack, said the sins that contributed to six sacks (quarterback Tim Carey also fell down twice retreating from center) are correctable.

"They got into our gaps and had good leverage," Olejack said. "Once they do that, the blocker has to overreact and he's off balance. It's a technique thing we'll be able to work on."

It also helped Wyoming that it was able to blitz with little fear of getting burned.

"We play lots of man-to-man. That's our base coverage," Dimel said. "Our coverage lets us bring one more guy. When you can play man-to-man, that means you should always have a guy putting pressure on the quarterback who won't have a blocker assigned to him.

"Tonight, we almost always had that, or we had our center fielder helping out (in coverage)."

That was safety Brian Lee, who returned his 11th career interception 56 yards for the Cowboys' second score, early in the second quarter.

And after Jenkins got his second TD right before the half, it looked like the Rainbows could be headed for another Rout 66. But Dimel gave Hawaii credit for making it a game for awhile in the third quarter.

"We've got one of the best if not the best team in the conference, and they gave us all we could handle," he said. "They certainly play very hard."

But as the Rainbows have repeatedly said, they're not into moral victories -- especially when they promise more.

"We won pretty big last year, and the lack of at least a little respect for that made us kind of mad," said Cowboy tackle Jeff Leonard, who had two sacks among his six tackles.
