Borges misses
big-band bash

THE Big Band Bash dinner and auction to benefit the Institute for Human Services went off as scheduled Saturday night at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. But while the big band led by Clyde Pound was there, featured entertainer Jimmy Borges, a tireless IHS supporter and board member, wasn't. He was ordered by his doctor to say home due to illness, and for Borges to pass up an opportunity to sing with a big band before a big audience, you know he must really be sick. Wife Vicky Borges was on hand to represent him, and singer Cheyanne filled in admirably. Borges was also supposed to be doing some filling in of his own tonight and tomorrow for pal Shari Lynn at the Hale Koa's Warrior Bar. She's off for a return engagement at the Rock Garden Cafe in Palm Springs with pianist Bob Corwin. Guess he'll have to pass on that gig too ...

AT that same dinner I offered solemn thanks to Mayor Jeremy Harris for throwing a huge birthday party in my honor in downtown Honolulu Friday. He didn't miss a beat: "Just see what we've got planned for you next year." I enjoyed strolling through the downtown ho'olaulea and seeing so many people partying, even if they didn't know it was my big 6-0 birthday. Meanwhile, Judge Ambrose Rosehill was surprised by friends the following night -- Saturday -- at a party marking his reaching the big 7-0. And promoter Kimo McVay continues to mark time a decade in advance of me, celebrating his 70th on Thursday ...

ALSO at the IHS party was the "Ambassador of Aloha," Danny Kaleikini, and we recalled first meeting when we worked on a musical together in, you should pardon the expression, 1957 at UH ... Councilman Jon Yoshimura also dropped by after attending another function for the Lupus Foundation ... Two doctors were seated at my table, and when they revealed they were both orthopedic surgeons, they said as one, "Don't break anything!" ...

Giveaways galore—maybe

FIRST it was Royal Hawaiian Heritage Jewelry, which offered a 100 per cent rebate on all purchases in August if the temperature reached 93 on Aug. 31. It just missed. Then we told you about the video shop in Happy Valley, Penn., that is offering a total rebate on all sales if the local Penn State football team goes 12-0. They're still undefeated, but it's no gimme. Now comes Furnitureland, where Jon Lum has proclaimed all sales between now and Oct. 5 will be free if rainfall at Honolulu Airport is one-quarter inch or above from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Discoverers' Day, Oct. 13. Anybody in a gambling mood? ...

ENJOYING a quiet luncheon at Hoku's in the Kahala Mandarin last week were two ladies close to showbiz. Ann Simpson, whose son Jim is married to actress Sigourney Weaver, and dear friend Marie Lord, wife of Mr. Hawaii Five-O, Jack Lord, were enjoying one of their regular outings together ... Titus Chan, who for years did a cooking show on local TV, is at it again. The new "Cooking the Chan-ese Way," debuts Sunday on KITV ...

Pie chart

BUILDING managers throughout downtown Honolulu were looking askance when a group from GST Telecom Hawaii swept through the other day. All was OK, however, when they learned it was GST V.P. Rob Volker's good way of drawing people's attention to his service by delivering 1,500 fresh apple pies to various offices. It got the attention of the secretaries at the very least. Volker cooked up the idea to show businesses that switching their accounts to a new local phone company can be, well, as easy as pie ...
