Managing to improve property

Paul W. Hallin has worked on everything from a $40 million home at Black Point for developer Chris Hemmeter to new hotels and big-box retail outlets. Now he uses that experience at A&B Properties Inc. as the company deals with a growing portfolio of Hawaii and mainland properties.

"My job is to look at projects and improve them or put additions on them," Hallin said.

A&B Properties manages about 3 million square feet of space, about two-thirds of it on the mainland. About half of its revenues come from Hawaii properties.

Hallin joined A&B Properties in October 1992 as a project manager. He helped develop the Manele Bay Hotel for the Lanai Co., and the Westin Kauai Hotel for Hemmeter Development Co..

He has a bachelor's degree in business economics from the University of California at Los Angeles.
