SATURDAY

Fun day at Border's, Waikele: Begin the day visiting with volunteers from the Hawaii Nature Center. There will be interactive activities that teach about Hawaii's environment, 10 a.m.-noon.

Stop and visit "Clifford the Big Red Dog, who will be available for picture taking 10-11 a.m.

Then, listen as Walter "The Giant Storyteller" Mayes shares his favorite stories, 2 p.m.

CONTESTS

"What Is Your Constitution?": Children in grades four through 12 are wanted for the Hawaii Masons third annual essay contest.

In 750 words or less, writers should interview parents, grandparents, friends or other sources for information and opinions promoting patriotism and awareness of the Constitution and its Bill of Rights.

Essays will be judged in three categories: grades four-six, seven-nine, and 10-12. First, second and third place winners will receive U.S. Savings Bonds for $500, $250 and $100, respectively.

Entries should be typed, double-spaced on plain white paper and sent to: "What Is Your Constitution?" c/o the Honolulu Masonic Temple, 1227 Makiki St., Honolulu, Hawaii 96814-1332. Deadline: Sept. 12. For information, call 955-5010.

Winners will be announced and presented with awards on Sept. 20.

Spelling bee: Children in grades 4 through 8 (in school year 1997 to 1998) are welcomed to register for the Hawaiian Spelling Bee being held 10 a.m.-noon Sept. 27, Ward Warehouse Amphitheater. Contestants will be required to spell and define Hawaiian words. Winner will receive a computer for his or her class and a class party. Limited to 20 participants. Registration forms available at 545-1771 (Oahu) or 1-800-852-7690 (outer islands).

LOOKING AHEAD

Teen crafts: Teens can socialize while creating art projects, 2:30 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Teen Loft at Kalihi-Palama Public Library. The first 12 participants will be provided with craft supplies.

Make a mask: Ben Moffat presents "TRANSFORMATIONS: The Art of Masks," 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17, Salt Lake/Moanalua Public Library. For information, call 831-6831.

"Aquarium After Dark": Find out what fishes do at night, 7-9 p.m. Sept. 20, Waikiki Aquarium. Children must be 5-years-old or older and accompanied by an adult. Cost: $7, adult; $6, children.
