Choose from six entrees and eight side dishes, plus French bread or dinner rolls; then zap the "Great Meal Combo" in less than 10 minutes. Presto change-o: dinner for four on the table. From the Safeway deli:
Instant dinnerIt's a Safeway revolution -- turkey-to-go in a new incarnation.
"The big, big kickoff is this week," a Safeway district spokeswoman said about the Great Meal Combos program. It's being unveiled in Safeway's Northern California Division, which includes Hawaii stores.
"We may never have to cook again," she said.
Consider the entree options: roast chicken, meatloaf or pot pie for $9.99. Or, for $14.99, London broil, roast pork loin or turkey breast.
Just add two side dishes from a choice of eight, including macaroni and cheese, garlic mashed potatoes, old-fashioned stuffing, BBQ beans. Also, cheddar/bacon mashed potatoes, butternut squash, creamy spinach and cinnamon apples.
The spinach, mashed potatoes and chicken are early favorites.
"The combos are on a refrigerated table in the deli department," the spokeswoman explained. "Shoppers can pick up chicken and two side dishes -- they can make whatever combos they want -- and pick up a loaf of French bread. It's all refrigerated. Just take it home, pop it in the micro and they'll be all ready for dinner."
