Sea Warriors
outlast Silverswords

Doreen Fiaui and Janet Kennedy each had 19 kills to lead the Hawaii Pacific University women's volleyball team to an 11-15, 15-3, 15-4, 12-15, 15-11 win over Chaminade University last night at St. Andrew's Priory Gym.

Setter Jhoana Maristela had 54 assists and came up with 22 digs as the Sea Warriors improved to 5-1.

Chaminade fell to 3-2.

The teams meet again tonight at McCabe Gym, at 7:30.

MOYNAHANDEFENDSTITLE:Brendyn Moynahan will defend his title at the Aloha Section PGA Match Play Championship next Monday through Wednesday at the Wailea Gold Course on Maui.

The qualifying round to determine the seedings in the 32-player field will be held Sunday.

Other pros in the field include section stroke-play champion Joe Root, Dick McClean, Greg Meyer, Kevin Hayashi and Marc Orlowski.

MIYASHIRO ADVANCES: At Northfield, N.J., Marie Miyashiro of Honolulu defeated Susan Marchese of Omaha, Neb., 5 and 3, in the first round of the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur yesterday at the Atlantic City Country Club course yesterday.

THREE WINS FOR 65s: At Salt Lake City, Utah, the Hawaii 65s softball team won three games yesterday at the Senior World Championships.

Playing in the AAA division, Hawaii 65s beat the California Golden Eagles, 15-14, after trailing 14-8 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Hawaii 65s also beat the California Condors, 16-0, and Murraysville, Pa., 19-16.

KEMPO CHAMPIONSHIPS: The third annual Hawaiian Chinese Kempo Championships will be held Sunday at Halawa District Park Gym, at 9 a.m.

There is a $15 entry fee. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. For information, call Ed Louis at 455-4486.

SETA NAMED CO-CAPTAIN: Christine Seta, a Punahou School graduate, has been named co-captain of the Connecticut College women's soccer team.

Seta, a senior, started all 14 games for the Camels last season.

FALLTENNISDEADLINE: Friday is the deadline to enter the Hilton Fall Tennis Classic (Sept. 19-21) at the Turtle Bay Hilton.

Competition will be held in men's and women's 2.5 through 4.5 classes in singles and doubles.

Players must be 19 or older and have a USTA/NTRP rating.

GOLD MEDAL WINNERS: Stella Brinch (Punahou Aquatics), Gerald Bolson (Kamehameha Aquatic Team) and Randall Tom (Maui Swim Club) won gold medals in the Speedo Western Regional Zone swimming meet at Roseville, Calif., Aug. 12-16.

Brinch won the 200-meter individual medley in two minutes, 28.6 seconds in the 11-12 age group.

In the 10-and-under division, Bolson finished first in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:26.06) and Tom won the 50-meter butterfly (33.27).

RECRUITING OVER: University of Hawaii-Hilo basketball coach Jim Forkum has completed his recruiting for the coming season by adding three players to the Vulcans roster.

They are Derek Grace, a 7-foot center from Waiakea High School who is transferring from Linfield College (Ore.); 6-1 freshman guard Ryan Riewerts from Arcata High School in Blue Lake, Calif., and 5-5 guard Benny Sullivan from East Anchorage High School in Anchorage, Alaska.
