Ticket prices cut
for this week’s game

Ticket sales for the first two games have been so poor, University of Hawaii officials are offering discounted prices for this week's Western Athletic Conference opener with Wyoming.

Tickets purchased between today and Friday will be discounted $2 at the Aloha Stadium box office. Tickets purchased in the north end zone will be discounted $4 for anyone who buys four or more.

Hawaii has averaged only 30,716 in its first two home games. Last year, the Rainbows drew an average of 31,240 for their first two games with Boston College and Ohio University.

"We're trying to do what we can to get 45,000 people in there this weekend for the Wyoming game," UH assistant athletic director Jim Donovan said yesterday. "We want to do everything we can to help our team win.

"That's why we dropped the price for this game and why we're investigating ways to better price the stadium in the future. We support the players and the coaches, and we want to give them what we can to help them win."

Rainbows head coach Fred vonAppen reiterated yesterday that the marketing problems should have been addressed in the spring, not now, but was glad some effort was being made to increase the fan base.

"My feeling is that all of this is a little after-the-fact," vonAppen said. "I've been on record about this before.

"I also think the 3 o'clock starting times are necessary to take advantage of the heat and humidity.

"But if they love their swap market around here more than their football team, then so be it."

Donovan said it was possible that next year the Rainbows would have two 3 p.m. start times, but conceded that fan participation would be a key.

"If 90 percent say they will come at 3 p.m., then we should look into doing it," Donovan said. "If only 60 percent say they will come, then we might have to take a look before making any decisions."

KLEMM'S ON A LIMB: Offensive lineman Adrian Klemm will learn his fate sometime this week, but it doesn't appear he will miss the next game.

WAC officials kicked Klemm out of the game after he retaliated for being punched in the groin by a Cal State Northridge player.

According to NCAA rules, players kicked out of a game for fighting must miss four quarters from the point of their expulsion.

If that ruling stands, the sophomore tackle won't be back until the second half of this week's game with Wyoming. And if he gets kicked out again, he will miss the rest of the season.

"But we don't think that's going to happen," vonAppen said. "It wasn't a felony. The league officials said they wouldn't recommend any kind of suspension.

"In my mind, that's beside the point because Adrian made a huge mistake. He put himself before the team and we won't tolerate that kind of thing.

"We told our players Northridge was a maverick team and not to get caught up in any of that bull. It was a selfish act on his part and we thoroughly chewed out his butt for it."

Klemm felt badly for it, but said the guy grabbed hold of his groin in the pile and wouldn't let go.

"It hurt," Klemm said. "I was just trying to get him to let me go. I felt bad about it because I let down my teammates. I won't let it happen again."

INJURY UPDATE: The Rainbows didn't exit this game unscathed.

Backup nose guard Tony Tuioti suffered a torn posterior ligament and will be out at least a month, team physicians confirmed after the game.

"It's not as serious as a torn anterior cruciate ligament," physician Darryl Kan said. "But he'll probably miss a month of the season."

Offensive lineman Gary Krug also suffered a mild knee sprain, but is listed as probable. Running back Anthony Diieso is bothered by a turf toe and is questionable.

So are linebacker Rufus Ayeni and wide receiver Jason Mane. Mane suffered a torn ACL the first week of fall camp, while Ayeni tore his medial ligament in a scrimmage. Trainers believe he has a better chance of being in the lineup than Mane.

Linebacker Rinda Brooks also is expected to return this weekend. He missed the Northridge game with a pulled stomach muscle.
